The Experience
You check in at a colonial-era stone plantation house that doubles as reception, then wind up brick paths through jasmine and frangipani to your own private cottage. Inside, you get more of a home than a hotel room: a full kitchen, a bed-sitting room with a queen-size bed, cable TV, a modern shower, and a front porch and balcony that hang out over the sea. Days settle into a slow rhythm — a swim in the small hilltop pool, a coffee on the balcony watching pilots thread the impossibly short Juancho E. Yrausquin runway below, then a five-minute stroll down into Windwardside for dinner. The vibe is quiet, residential, and unmistakably local; there are no lobbies to cross or resort crowds to dodge, just birds in the garden and the occasional whistle of trade winds coming up the ridge.
What to Try
Ask for a cottage on the outer edge of the property for the biggest sea-and-runway view, then use the full kitchen to cook a proper island breakfast with produce from the Windwardside shops. Take advantage of the pool deck at golden hour — the light on Mount Scenery from up here is what people remember. Walk (don't drive) into the village so you can nose into the little museums, dive shops, and Saba lacework stalls along the way.
Insider Tip
Because every cottage has a real kitchen, plan a grocery run on your first afternoon — Saba's tiny supermarkets close early and Sundays are largely dark. Stock up on coffee, eggs, and a bottle of something cold, and you'll save yourself the steep uphill walk back for breakfast. Also: mention you're arriving on the evening flight and the family can usually leave the porch light on and the key out for you.
