Amonhana

Saba's easygoing pizza-and-pints hangout in the heart of Windwardside

Why Go

On an island where dinner options can be counted on two hands, Amonhana has become the reliable, no-fuss favorite locals point to when you ask where to grab a laid-back bite — think hand-stretched pizza, cold local beer, and a table you can actually walk up to after a day of scrambling around the volcano.

The Experience

Tucked along Hassell Road in Windwardside, Amonhana keeps things refreshingly simple. The kitchen makes its dough from scratch every morning, so pizzas come out with a proper chew and just-charred edges — a small miracle on a 5-square-mile island where every ingredient has to be barged or flown in. The vibe is casual and unpretentious: locals popping in for lunch, divers refueling between tanks, hikers still wearing their boots. Order at the counter, grab a booth or a spot on the terrace, and settle in with a Saba Splash or a locally brewed beer. It's the kind of place you end up at twice in the same trip without meaning to, mostly because it hits the sweet spot between hungry-after-a-hike and don't-feel-like-changing-clothes.

What to Try

The pizza is the headline act — a classic Margherita is the honest test of that fresh dough, and it passes. If you're ravenous after climbing Mt. Scenery, go for a loaded pie and split a plate of wings. Sandwiches and big salads round out the menu for lighter appetites or a quick lunch between activities. Pair whatever you order with a locally brewed beer for the full small-island moment.

Insider Tip

They're closed Sundays and the kitchen keeps island hours, so plan ahead — Saba has very few dinner alternatives, and Amonhana fills up fast on cruise-visit days and weekend evenings. Call ahead (+599 416 2025) to reserve a pizza for pickup if you're staying at a cottage with a view; eating on your own porch as the clouds roll over the Windwardside rooftops is a very Saban dinner.
