Why Go
You don't so much visit Big Stone as bump into it — a hulking, name-painted rock parked at one of Oranjestad's busiest crossroads that locals have used as a directional landmark for generations. On an island where addresses are casual and GPS is optional, this is the closest thing Statia has to a compass.
The Experience
Sitting at the junction of Welfare Road and the Road to English Quarter, Big Stone is exactly what it sounds like: a substantial boulder, way too big to have wandered there on its own, with 'Big Stone' obligingly painted across its face. Everyone driving between downtown Oranjestad, the Golden Rock Resort area, and the trailheads for The Quill volcano passes it, which is why every set of directions you'll get on Statia eventually includes the phrase 'turn at Big Stone.' It's a two-minute stop, but a very Statian one — equal parts landmark, meeting point, and running local joke about Caribbean wayfinding.
What to Try
Snap the obligatory photo with the painted lettering, then use it the way locals do: as your pivot point for the rest of the day. From here it's a short roll downhill into historic Oranjestad's Fort Oranje and the cobblestone Upper Town, or a climb in the opposite direction toward The Quill's rainforest trails. If you're driving a rental, orient yourself here once and the whole island suddenly makes sense.
Insider Tip
Ask three Statians for directions and at least two will use Big Stone as a reference — so when you're told to 'go past Big Stone and take the second track,' don't overthink it. Also: pass by around golden hour on your way back from a Quill hike; the light on the painted rock and the Caribbean below makes for a far better photo than the harsh midday version.

Location: intersection of Welfare Road and Road to English Quarter, just outside central Oranjestad, Sint Eustatius (Caribbean Netherlands). Access: open-air roadside landmark, visible 24/7, completely free. Getting there: a 5-minute drive or a walkable 15–20 minutes uphill from Fort Oranje; any taxi driver knows it by name. Time needed: 5 minutes for the stop, or use it as a jumping-off point for a half-day exploring Oranjestad and The Quill.
