Why Go
Somewhere between the 700th stone step and the mist, the Caribbean drops away and you're standing above the clouds — on a summit most travelers have never heard of, let alone climbed.
The Experience
This is one of the reward-viewpoints strung along the Mt. Scenery trail above Windwardside, the stone-step staircase that climbs 887 meters through elfin cloud forest to the highest point in the Dutch Kingdom. The path is damp, mossy and quiet — tree ferns arch overhead, orchids cling to gnarled trunks, and the only soundtrack is your own breathing and the occasional bananaquit. Then the canopy breaks. On a clear morning you'll see the red-roofed gingerbread houses of Windwardside far below, the cobalt Caribbean stretching to St. Eustatius, St. Kitts and even St. Barths on the horizon. On a cloudy afternoon (more common), you're literally inside a passing weather system, watching the mist tear open and stitch itself shut again in seconds. It feels less like a Caribbean scenic stop and more like a small, private summit in the Andes that someone accidentally left on a five-mile-wide volcanic island.
What to Try
Time your climb for a 6:30–7:00 a.m. start — cloud cover thickens by mid-morning and the view is at its clearest at sunrise. Pause at each of the wooden shelters on the way up; the lower ones offer the sweeping ocean panoramas, while the summit itself is often wrapped in mist. Bring a light layer: the temperature drops noticeably above 600 meters and the wind at the top can be surprisingly cold. Look for the endemic Anolis sabanus lizard on tree trunks and, if you're lucky, the red-bellied racer snake sunning near the steps.
Insider Tip
Skip the full 1,064-step slog if you're short on time or knees: drive to the top of Mountain Road and pick up the trail from there — it shaves roughly 25 minutes off the ascent and delivers you straight to the best viewpoints. Locals also swear by climbing on a 'half-cloud' day; the shifting fog makes the panoramic reveals feel almost cinematic, and you'll have the shelters largely to yourself.
The Practical Stuff
Trailhead is a short walk from Windwardside village center, opposite the Trail Shop (buy your park tag there — proceeds fund the Saba Conservation Foundation). Roundtrip: 2.5–3 hours at a steady pace. Wear real hiking shoes with grip — the stones get slick — and pack at least a liter of water plus a rain shell. No food, no bathrooms, no phone signal on the upper trail. Free to hike, though a small conservation fee is requested. Best months: December–April for clearer skies; expect mud year-round.
