You won't see Big Rock on a tourist map, but every rental Jeep, dive-shop pickup, and public bus on Saba eventually rolls through its Fort Bay Road pumps. This Johnson-family operation is the island's fuel, LPG, and construction-materials lifeline — the kind of behind-the-scenes essential travelers only notice when it runs dry.
The Experience
Tucked along Fort Bay Road below the switchbacks that climb to Windward Side and St. Johns, Big Rock Engineering feels less like a service station and more like a working island depot. Trucks queue for diesel, locals swing by with LPG cylinders, and construction crews load sand and gravel for the next hillside build. It's compact, unfussy, and refreshingly real — a working slice of Saba where the Johnson family (descendants of some of the island's earliest settlers) still runs the show alongside their sons and grandchildren. If you're renting a car to explore The Road, this is where your fuel gauge sends you.
What to Try
Top up your rental before tackling the drive to Mt. Scenery or the airport road — Saba's only gas station means there's no Plan B. If you're on a longer stay in a villa or apartment, this is also where you'll swap LPG cylinders for cooking gas, and where contractors source aggregate, cement, and building supplies. Ask about equipment rental if you're on a work trip; they've long been the go-to for heavy gear on-island.
Insider Tip
Fuel deliveries to Saba arrive by ship and occasionally run behind schedule — in past shortages the whole island's public transport ground to a halt. Fill up whenever your tank drops below half, and don't leave a Saturday-morning top-up for Sunday: Big Rock is closed all day Sunday, and there's nowhere else to go. Cash and local payment methods are safest; card acceptance on Saba can be patchy.
