On an island where most guests fetch up in Oranjestad, Serenity Estate stakes out the quieter side of St. Eustatius — a single low-slung house carved into four private studios, closer to the black sand of Zeelandia Beach than any other bed on the island.
The Experience
Pulling up to 55 Zeelandia Beach Rd feels less like a check-in and more like being handed a key to your own patch of Statia. The estate is genuinely tranquil: goats picking through the scrub, the Quill's rainforest crown filling the southern skyline, and the low Atlantic thunder of Zeelandia rolling in over the hill. Each of the four studios is fully self-contained — kitchenette, private bath, indoor-outdoor living space — so you can cook a slow breakfast, disappear for a dive, and come back to your own quiet corner rather than a busy lobby. Hosts Sebastiaan and Iris live the island rhythm themselves and, because they also run Statia Rental, they can hand you the keys to a car at the same time you pick up the room key, which on an island this small is the difference between seeing everything and seeing nothing.
What to Try
Walk the ten minutes down the sandy track to Zeelandia Beach at sunrise, when the black sand is still cool and you'll have the two-mile Atlantic sweep entirely to yourself (swim at the sheltered south end only — the main break has serious rip currents). Pack a mask and fins for the short drive to the Aquarium dive site, one of Statia's signature reefs, teeming with tarpon and turtles. In the late afternoon, hike a stretch of the Quill trail from the estate side — even a half hour up rewards you with a view straight down onto your own roof and out to Saba floating on the horizon. Cook in on at least one night; the studios' kitchenettes are made for it, and the estate's stargazing (zero light pollution) is dessert.
Insider Tip
Ask Sebastiaan about the unmarked cut-through from the property down to the beach — it saves a good ten minutes over the road route and drops you at the calmer south end where a couple of natural rock pools form at low tide. Also: bring cash euros for St. Eustatius National Parks tags (dive and hike passes), because card machines on Statia have a habit of being 'down today.'
