The Experience
Sint Eustatius doesn't do resort beaches, and Baby Beach is the perfect proof. It's a modest, easy-to-miss patch of dark volcanic sand and calm shallow water sitting just off Van Tonningenweg, the winding road that drops from Upper Town Oranjestad down to the historic Lower Town waterfront. On any given afternoon you'll share it with a handful of Statians cooling off after work, a couple of divers rinsing gear, and maybe the occasional pelican doing patrol. The setting is pure Statia: crumbling 18th-century warehouse walls at your back, the Caribbean stretching out toward Saba and St. Kitts in front, and virtually no one else in sight. Swimming is generally gentle here compared to the Atlantic-facing Zeelandia side of the island, which is why the 'baby' nickname stuck — the water tends to be calmer, shallower and friendlier for a quick float than a serious swim session. Bring a towel, a book and low expectations about amenities and you'll leave feeling like you found something the guidebooks missed.
What to Try
Pair a morning at the beach with a slow walk along the Lower Town historic trail — the ruined blue-bead warehouses, old sea wall and cannon batteries are all within a five-minute stroll. Snorkel close to shore to spot small reef fish darting around the submerged stonework from Statia's Golden Rock trading era. Time your visit for late afternoon so you can climb the Bay Path or drive back up Van Tonningenweg in time to catch sunset over the anchorage from Fort Oranje.

Come at low tide and in the morning. The beach is genuinely small, and afternoon swell plus a rising tide can shrink the usable sand to almost nothing. There's no lifeguard, no rental hut, no bar and no shade to speak of — pack water, reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes, because the entry has patches of rocks and old ballast stone mixed in with the sand. Cash-only for anything you buy nearby, and know that most of Lower Town closes early.
