Barrel House St. Eustatius Classic Apartment
Sleep inside a 1720 Dutch brick landmark, steps from the Caribbean.
Why Go
When the sea sighs against the Lower Town wall at dusk, the Barrel House feels less like a rental and more like a small slice of Statia's Golden Rock era with air conditioning and Nespresso.
The Experience
Tucked into a meticulously restored 1720 Dutch brick warehouse on Van Tonningeweg, the Classic Apartment is a two-level suite where thick coral-stone walls, timber beams, and shuttered windows do most of the storytelling. Downstairs you get a fully equipped kitchenette and seating area; upstairs the bedroom opens toward the trade winds. A private terrace faces the water, and during calmer months a thin ribbon of sand actually forms at your doorstep. It shares grounds with The Old Gin House, so you can slip into the pool, order breakfast at the family-friendly restaurant, or grab a coffee at the shop without ever crossing a road. Fort Oranje and the museum quarter are a five-minute walk uphill, and Franklin D. Roosevelt Airport is roughly two kilometres away, meaning you can be checked in ten minutes after landing.
What to Try
Take your morning coffee out onto the patio before the cruise-free harbour wakes up, then walk the old Slave Path up to Fort Oranje for the ramparts view of the roadstead. Book at least one dive on the wreck-and-reef sites just offshore (the Aquarium is a short boat ride away) and come home to a rinse under the outdoor shower. In the evening, cook a light supper from Duggins supermarket up the hill, or wander a hundred metres to the Old Gin House restaurant for a proper sit-down meal on the terrace.
Insider Tip
Ask for the upstairs shutters to be left open at night if the wind is calm — the surf and the halyards down at the pier are the whole Statia soundtrack, and there is almost no traffic to interrupt it. And time a stay around a new moon: Lower Town has minimal light pollution, and the Milky Way sits right over the Caribbean from your terrace.
The Practical Stuff
Address: Van Tonningeweg 38, Oranjestad, Sint Eustatius (Caribbean Netherlands), on the Lower Town waterfront beside The Old Gin House. Roughly 2 km / 5 minutes from FDR Airport; the island has no public transport, so pre-book a taxi or a rental with Antillean Horde Car Rental. Check-in from 14:00, check-out by 12:00. The 70 m² apartment sleeps two, is air-conditioned, non-smoking, and does not accept pets. Free Wi-Fi, shared pool, and two on-site restaurants. Bring reef-safe sunscreen (required in the Statia Marine Park) and cash euros or USD for smaller vendors; card acceptance is patchy off-site.
