The Experience
Zeelandia is the largest beach on Sint Eustatius, stretching roughly two miles along the island's northern shore. The sand is a striking mix of dark beige and volcanic black, framed by low cliffs and sea grape trees. This is not a manicured resort beach — it's raw, moody, and often windswept. Trade winds pick up in the afternoon, sending spray off the whitecaps, and the beach's remoteness (no bars, no vendors, no lifeguards) makes it feel more like a private discovery than a public attraction. Come at sunrise for glassy light on the dunes, or late afternoon when the sun angles across The Quill and the entire beach glows amber. It's also the island's most important sea turtle nesting site, so a slow walk near the tide line can turn into unexpected wildlife-watching.
What to Try
Walk the full length of the beach from the south end near Zeelandia village up toward the cliffs beneath Boven National Park — it's the best free hike on Statia and takes about 90 minutes round trip. Bring a hat, water, and a camera; the driftwood and volcanic pebble patches make for great beachcombing. Between March and October, ask STENAPA (the parks foundation) about ranger-led turtle patrols at dusk, when leatherbacks, greens, and hawksbills come ashore to nest. Pack a picnic — there is genuinely nowhere to buy food or drink.
Insider Tip
Do not swim here. Zeelandia has powerful undertows and rip currents that catch even strong swimmers off guard, and there are no lifeguards. Locals will tell you the same thing: wade to your ankles, take the photos, and save your snorkeling for the calmer leeward beaches like Oranje Bay. Also, cell service is patchy along the northern stretch, so let someone know before you head out for a long walk.
The Practical Stuff
Located on the northeast coast just past Zeelandia village, about a 10-minute drive from Oranjestad. A rental car or scooter is basically essential — there's no regular public transport out this way, and it's an uphill walk back. Free to access, open 24/7, no facilities. Wear sturdy sandals: the sand gets hot and there can be washed-up sargassum in summer. Best visited early morning or late afternoon to dodge the midday sun and the strongest winds.
