Blink on approach and you'll miss it. F. D. Roosevelt Airport (EUX) is barely more than a runway, a wind sock and a low-slung terminal wedged between the Quill volcano and the Caribbean Sea, and yet it's the only way most travellers ever set foot on St. Eustatius. Named after the U.S. president who quietly slipped through the island in 1943, this is one of the smallest commercial airports in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the arrival ritual, hopping off a Winair Twin Otter into 30-degree trade winds with the Quill staring you down, is half the reason people fall for Statia in the first place.
The Experience
Arriving at EUX feels less like landing at an airport and more like being dropped off at a friend's driveway. Winair's short-hop turboprops from St. Maarten bank hard over the reef, level off just above the runway, and taxi to a terminal you could walk end to end in under a minute. There are no jet bridges, no crowds, no shopping concourse; just a single check-in counter, a couple of ceiling fans, a small departures lounge and a handful of officials who quickly start recognising repeat visitors. Baggage is often hand-delivered from the belly of the aircraft to a low counter where you simply pick yours up. Because Statia sees only a trickle of passengers a day, the whole experience is refreshingly analog, more island bus stop than international hub, and it sets exactly the right tone for the slow, unhurried days that follow on the island.
What to Try
Grab the window seat on the left flying in from SXM for postcard views of Saba's needle-like silhouette, then the Quill's perfect green cone rising out of the sea; on the return, sit on the right for a farewell sweep over Oranjestad and the historic Lower Town ruins. Watch the ground crew hand-load the Twin Otter, it's a proper aviation-nerd moment. Step outside the terminal for a photo under the classic 'F. D. Roosevelt Airport' sign, then pop into the tiny departures lounge for a cold Polar or Carib beer before your flight home. If you're a diver, ask the check-in staff about the weight allowance for gear; they're used to it and often more flexible than the fare rules suggest.
Insider Tip
Winair's schedule between SXM and EUX shifts often and the Twin Otters are strict on baggage, so travel light (aim for 20 kg total, checked plus carry-on) and pack anything essential, dive computer, medication, swimsuit, in your carry-on. Weather cancellations do happen, especially in the wet season, so avoid booking same-day onward international flights out of St. Maarten; give yourself at least one night's buffer at SXM. Arrive at EUX only about an hour before departure, any earlier and you'll simply be sitting on a bench watching iguanas cross the tarmac.
The Practical Stuff
Airport code EUX, located just outside Oranjestad on the northeast side of St. Eustatius (Statia), Caribbean Netherlands. The only scheduled carrier is Winair, with multiple daily 15 to 20 minute hops on De Havilland Twin Otters from Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) in St. Maarten; there are no direct international flights. Facilities are minimal: check-in desk, small departures lounge, restrooms, a snack counter that keeps island hours, and a car-rental kiosk or two, no ATMs, so bring US dollars or euros with you. Taxis meet every arriving flight (roughly 10 to 15 USD to most guesthouses in Oranjestad); pre-booked rental cars are usually left in the small parking lot with keys at the desk. Bring your passport, and note that departure tax is normally already included in your Winair ticket.
