Aquarium Dive Site: Statia's Living Fishbowl

Why Go
Slip beneath the surface off Statia's coast and you'll understand the name instantly. A cluster of rocky pinnacles rises from the sand, wrapped in swirling clouds of small reef fish so dense it feels like you've stepped inside a giant living aquarium. Green and hawksbill turtles glide through, resident octopus tuck into cracks, and macro shooters lose themselves in the tiny details.
The Experience
Aquarium is one of St. Eustatius's crowd-favorite sites, protected inside the St. Eustatius National Marine Park alongside 35 other dive spots packed into just over 10 square miles of water. The site sits around 14 metres (roughly 46 feet) at its deepest, which keeps bottom times generous and the light bright, so colors on the reef pop. Volcanic geology is the secret ingredient here: nutrient-rich upwellings feed the reef, drawing in turtles from every direction, schools of grunts and snappers, moray eels wedged into holes, and one of the healthiest small-critter populations on the island. Because most of Statia's dive sites are only about seven minutes from the harbour, Aquarium is easy to pair with a second dive the same morning.
What to Try
Circle the main pinnacle slowly and let the fish curtain part around you — that's the signature Aquarium moment. Bring a macro lens or a magnifier: this is arguably the best site on the island for arrow crabs, blennies, secretary blennies peeking out of coral holes, and the resident octopus if you can spot it. Keep an eye on the sand flats around the base for napping hawksbills and stingrays. Divers who take their time near the crevices are usually the ones who leave with the best sightings.
Insider Tip
Aquarium only opens up when the sea state cooperates, so it isn't a daily option — ask your dive operator (Scubaqua, Golden Rock, or Statia Divers) the night before which sites are on the boat schedule and specifically request Aquarium. Go on the first dive of the day: light is best, fish behaviour is calmest, and you'll have the pinnacles largely to yourself.
The Practical Stuff
Access is by boat only, launched from the harbour in Oranjestad — you must dive with one of Statia's licensed operators, as independent shore access isn't practical here. All divers pay a mandatory marine park fee (a nature tag), which funds reef protection and is valid for a calendar year. Bring proof of certification and, ideally, a recent logbook. Water temperatures sit between 26–28°C year-round, so a 3mm wetsuit is plenty. Visibility typically runs 20–30 metres. Nitrox is available through the local shops and worth it for repetitive dives.
