Why Go
Oyster Pond is a natural harbour on the east coast, almost closed off from the sea by two headlands, with a marina inside it and hills either side. It is one of the quietest places to stay on the island and one of the few where the two halves of St. Martin meet without a road sign telling you — the border runs through the water here, and where exactly has never been fully agreed. Dawn Beach is a few minutes south. Beyond that there is very little, which is the point.
The Experience
The pond itself is a sheltered basin of moored boats, with the marina buildings and a run of restaurants along the western shore and villas climbing the slopes behind. It faces east, so the mornings are bright and the trade wind comes straight in, and the entrance channel is narrow enough that watching a yacht thread it is a spectator sport. Away from the water the area is residential and steep, with no strip to walk and no nightlife at all. This corner took heavy damage in 2017 and rebuilt slowly, so it is quieter now than the older guidebooks suggest, with some businesses gone and others still finding their feet. Babit Point closes the southern side and the coastal path over it is the walk here. What you are choosing by staying in Oyster Pond is a week with a car, a villa and a view, on a side of the island where nothing much happens and the loudest thing after dark is the rigging. People either love that immediately or spend the week driving to Simpson Bay, and it is usually clear which within a day.
What to Try
Eat along the marina: Big Fish Seafood Grill and Infinity Restaurant at Oyster Bay are the sit-down dinners with the boats in front of you, OASIS Restaurant & Pizzeria and Mama Pizza cover the informal end, and Bread and Butter is the morning. Veranda Market and Bistro and SXMLesHalles are where you shop if you are self-catering in a villa, which most people staying here are. Captain Alan's Boat Charters runs out of the pond and is the obvious way to spend a day — the east coast and the offshore cays are on your doorstep and rarely visited. Dawn Beach is a few minutes south and has the best snorkelling reef within reach. The Shipwreck Shop covers souvenirs. Otherwise this is a place to read, swim and watch boats, and it is entirely unapologetic about that.

Rent a car before you arrive, not after. Oyster Pond is genuinely isolated — twenty-five to thirty minutes from the airport, twenty from Philipsburg, and with nothing walkable beyond the marina itself — and visitors who plan on taxis discover quickly that the fares add up and the availability at night does not. The compensation is that you are ten minutes from Dawn Beach, fifteen from Orient Bay and half an hour from Grand Case, with almost no traffic in any direction.

Oyster Pond is about twenty-five to thirty minutes from Princess Juliana airport and twenty from Philipsburg, on the east coast. You need a car. The border between the Dutch and French sides runs through this area and is open with no formalities, so you may cross it without noticing — worth knowing only because currency and phone roaming can change on you. Parking around the marina is free and easy. There are no supermarkets of any size here; do a proper shop in Philipsburg, Cole Bay or on the French side before you settle in. The east coast is windward, so the water outside the pond is choppier than the Dutch-side beaches. Hurricane season runs roughly June to November, and this coast is exposed to it.
