Why Go
Dawn Beach is on the windward side of the island, which is the half most visitors never see, and it is named for exactly what you would guess: the sun comes up out of the sea in front of it. The sand is white and the water clear, and a reef sits close enough offshore to swim to, which makes this the best snorkelling you can reach from a beach towel on St. Maarten. The trade-off is the Atlantic. There is usually swell, sometimes a lot of it, and this is not the beach for a calm float.
The Experience
The beach runs south from Oyster Pond in a long pale curve, with resorts set back behind it and open water in front. Because it faces east it gets the weather first: the wind is steady, the surf works, and the water is livelier than anything on the Dutch side's leeward beaches. On calm mornings it is close to perfect — clear, quiet, and empty compared with Mullet Bay or Orient Bay. On rough days the shore break is serious and the reef gets churned to milk. There is very little development at ground level beyond the hotels, so the beach itself feels open and unbusy, and the crowd is mostly guests from the properties behind plus a handful of people who have driven over specifically for the snorkelling. That is the whole argument for making the drive: on the leeward side you are choosing between busy beaches, and here you are usually choosing between stretches of an empty one, with the reef thrown in.
What to Try
Bring a mask. The reef offshore is the reason to choose Dawn Beach over anywhere else on this coast, and on a calm morning you can swim out to it directly from the sand — no boat, no guide, no fee. Go early, before the wind gets up, which on this side of the island it reliably does by late morning. Beyond the water there is not much here by design, so the eating and the boats are a few minutes north at Oyster Pond: Big Fish Seafood Grill and Infinity Restaurant at Oyster Bay for dinner, Captain Alan's Boat Charters for a day out on a coast almost nobody visits. Combine the beach with the drive south along the windward shore toward Guana Bay, which is the emptiest stretch of coastline on the Dutch side.

Snorkel first thing and check the water before you commit. The reef here is genuinely good and genuinely accessible, but only when it is calm — the trade wind builds through the morning on this coast, and by midday what was clear water over coral is often churned and pushing. If the swell is up when you arrive, do not fight it: drive twenty minutes to Mullet Bay on the sheltered side instead and come back tomorrow at eight.

Dawn Beach is about twenty-five minutes from Princess Juliana airport and twenty from Philipsburg, on the east coast next to Oyster Pond. You need a car; there is no useful public transport and nothing walkable nearby beyond the resorts and the Oyster Pond marina a few minutes north. Parking is free and informal along the access road. The beach is public, as all Sint Maarten beaches are, and there are no facilities on the sand beyond what the hotels provide to guests — bring water, shade and your own snorkel gear. The east coast is windward year-round, so expect wind and swell as the normal condition rather than the exception. Hurricane season runs roughly June to November, and this shore takes the weather first.
