Tucked between The Bottom and Windwardside, Saint John's Hill is the quiet middle of Saba ΓÇö the spot where locals catch their breath, kids head to school, and a short trail up nearby Thais Hill rewards you with one of the island's most underrated 360-degree views.
The Experience
Saint John's is less a 'destination' and more a slice of everyday Saban life perched on a ridge between the island's two main settlements. Winding switchback roads climb through a small cluster of red-roofed white cottages, a couple of local eateries, and the island's schools. The real draw is what's just off the road: the Thais Hill Trail, a short 25-minute round-trip walk that pops you out at a seismic monitoring station with sweeping views over The Bottom, Fort Bay harbor, and on clear days the silhouettes of Statia, St. Kitts, and Nevis on the horizon. Trade winds keep the ridge cool even at midday, and the light in late afternoon ΓÇö when the sun drops behind Mt. Scenery ΓÇö turns the whole hillside gold.
What to Try
Lace up for the Thais Hill Trail (short, moderate, huge payoff). Pause at the St. John's Lighthouse viewpoint for photos of the west coast. Stop into one of the small local kitchens nearby for a plate of Saban stewed goat or a cold Carib after the walk. If you're driving The Road from Fort Bay up to Windwardside, plan to pull over here ΓÇö the sightline back down to the harbor is the best on the island.
Insider Tip
Do the Thais Hill hike in the last hour before sunset. The heat's off, the crosswinds die down, and you'll usually have the summit entirely to yourself while the Caribbean turns pink over Statia. Bring a light layer ΓÇö the ridge is noticeably cooler than sea level.

Location: On The Road between The Bottom and Windwardside, roughly the geographic center of Saba. Getting there: 5-minute drive from either village, or a stiff uphill walk from The Bottom (about 25 minutes). Taxis on Saba are informal ΓÇö arrange pickup in advance. Thais Hill Trail: ~25 minutes round-trip, moderate incline, sturdy shoes recommended. No admission or fees. Best in daylight; no lighting on the trail. Bring water, sun cover, and a wind layer.
