The Experience
From the outside, Sacred Heart looks like the quiet parish it is ΓÇö whitewashed stone, red roof, wooden doors flung open to The Bottom's sleepy main road. Step inside and the volume changes. Dutch-born Saban artist Heleen Cornet spent years painting the altar wall, weaving crucifixion and resurrection scenes through the island's cloud forest, so Christ appears amid orchids, tree ferns, and endemic birds rather than Judean desert. Locals nicknamed it 'Saba's Sistine Chapel,' and once you're standing under it, the comparison stops feeling like hyperbole. The church has been an anchor of Catholic life on the island since Father Norbertus Groen dedicated it on 19 March 1935 (the parish itself dates to 1877), and it still functions as a working congregation ΓÇö pews polished by generations of Sabans, hymnals stacked in the back, candles flickering near the side altar. It takes fifteen minutes to see and lingers much longer.
What to Try
Walk straight to the altar and look up ΓÇö Cornet's mural rewards slow reading, with tiny Saban details (a hummingbird here, a fern frond there) tucked into every panel. Then turn around and study the stained-glass windows, which throw colored light across the stone floor in the late afternoon. If a service is in session, hang back respectfully at the entrance; the acoustics inside the stone shell are worth a listen even from the doorway.

Come mid-morning on a weekday when the doors are usually unlocked and you'll likely have the nave to yourself ΓÇö the church is quietly stewarded rather than staffed, so there are no set visiting hours. Drop a few dollars in the donation box near the entrance; it goes toward maintenance of the mural and the building itself. Photography is fine, but skip the flash ΓÇö it flattens the mural's depth and disturbs anyone praying.
