The Experience
There is no depersonalized rental counter here. Pickup is arranged directly, often with someone who knows exactly which pull-outs have the best Mt. Scenery view and which bend to slow down for on the way to Fort Bay. The fleet leans toward well-maintained SUVs and 4x4s suited to Saba's grades — a very different animal from the compact econoboxes you'd grab on Sint Maarten. Paperwork is quick, keys are handed over with a real briefing on driving the island, and you're pointed toward Windward Side's cafés while the vehicle is prepped. Because everything is compact on Saba, you're rarely more than a few minutes from your hotel or dive shop.
What to Try
Book a vehicle with proper ground clearance if you plan to do the Elfin Forest trailhead run or the road down to Wells Bay — the extra couple of inches matter more than any luxury trim. Ask about multi-day rates if you're staying three nights or longer; on Saba, having your own wheels transforms a trip from taxi-dependent to genuinely spontaneous. If you're flying in on the famously short Yrausquin runway, arrange airport delivery in advance so you can drive straight from the terminal to your villa.

Drive in low gear going down, not just up — Saba veterans know that riding the brakes on the descent from Windward Side to Fort Bay will cook your pads by day two. Also: fuel up at the Fort Bay station before it closes (early afternoon on weekends), because there is quite literally nowhere else on the island to top off.
The Practical Stuff
Located in Windward Side, the island's main village and a natural base for exploring Saba. You'll need a valid driver's license; a temporary Saba driving permit is typically arranged through the rental. Roads are paved but exceptionally steep and narrow — honk before blind curves, yield to uphill traffic, and never leave a vehicle in neutral. Cash and card generally both accepted; confirm at booking. Contact ahead of arrival, especially in high season (Dec–Apr) when the small local fleet books out fast.
