The Experience
Perched above Zion's Hill (still stubbornly called Hell's Gate by locals), this raw, wind-scoured headland marks the top of Saba's dramatic North Coast. From up here the island falls away in a tangle of green cliffs, black lava spires, and hidden coves that most cruise-day visitors never glimpse. On a clear morning you can see St. Maarten shimmering across the channel and, on the horizon, the low outline of Anguilla. Tropicbirds and brown boobies wheel below eye-level, riding thermals up the cliff face, while the trade winds do their best to convince you the island is actually moving. It's the kind of quiet, cinematic viewpoint that makes you understand why Saba calls itself 'the Unspoiled Queen' - because there's genuinely nobody else here.
What to Try
Hike the North Coast Trail from Lower Hell's Gate down toward the abandoned village of Mary's Point (about 3.5 hours round trip) for the fullest experience of the headland. If you're short on time, walk the paved section up past the Holy Rosary Church - the 1962 stone 'gingerbread church' - and continue on foot until the road ends, then follow the goat tracks to the cliff edge. Bring binoculars for pelagic seabirds, and time your visit for late afternoon when the light rakes across the cliffs and Diamond Rock lights up offshore.
Insider Tip
Skip the middle of the day - the wind picks up violently after noon and haze rolls in from St. Maarten. Locals recommend arriving around 6:30 a.m. with a thermos: the tropicbirds are most active at dawn, the airport (the world's shortest commercial runway, just below you) usually has a small plane landing around 7:15, and you'll have the whole northern tip of the island entirely to yourself.
The Practical Stuff
Open access, free, no facilities. Drive or taxi to Zion's Hill / Hell's Gate (about 10 minutes from Windwardside, 15 from Fort Bay), park near the Holy Rosary Church, and walk the final stretch on foot - the last section is unpaved and steep. Wear proper hiking shoes; the volcanic gravel is loose and there are no barriers at the cliff edge. Cell coverage is patchy. Bring water, sun protection, and a windbreaker even on hot days.
