Why Go
Mount Scenery is the dormant volcanic peak that is Saba, and at 887 metres it is the highest point in the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands — higher than anything in the European part of the country by a considerable margin. The climb is a stone staircase of roughly a thousand steps cut into the mountain, rising from Windwardside through progressively wetter forest into an elfin cloud woodland at the top. It is the island's defining walk and the thing most visitors are here to do.
The Experience
The steps begin at the edge of Windwardside and climb steadily, and the change in vegetation is the real interest of the walk. The lower sections pass through gardens and secondary growth; higher up the trees close in, the air cools noticeably, and moss and epiphytes take over every surface. Near the summit the forest becomes elfin woodland — stunted, dripping, permanently in cloud — which is a genuinely strange habitat to find on a Caribbean island and exists here only because of the altitude. The summit itself is often entirely in cloud, and whether you get the view is a matter of timing and luck. Other trails contour around the mountain, including routes toward Mary's Point and the old sulphur mine on the northern flank. The mountain is also the island. Saba is a single volcanic cone rising straight out of deep water, and every village, road and terrace on it is cut into the flank of this one peak — which is why the walk up passes through the whole inhabited island in its first twenty minutes and then leaves it entirely behind.
What to Try
Climb it, allowing a morning: about ninety minutes up for most people and less coming down, though the descent is harder on the knees than the ascent is on the lungs. Start early, because the summit clouds over on most days by mid-morning. Take water and expect to be wet from humidity even in dry weather. Beyond the summit path, the Sandy Cruz trail contours the northern side through rainforest and is easier walking with better birdlife; the old Sulphur Mine trail drops to the north coast past the workings of a nineteenth-century venture that never came to much. Torrens Point and the tide pools on the north-west shore are the other end of the island's walking, and Diamond Rock stands offshore as the landmark of that coast.

Go up early and accept that the view is a lottery. The summit sits in cloud most days by mid-morning, and climbers who leave at eight see it far more often than those who leave at eleven — but on a genuinely closed-in day the top gives you a dripping green room and nothing else, and that is worth knowing before you set out disappointed. The forest itself is the reward; treat the panorama as a bonus. Proper shoes are not optional, because the steps are mossy and wet in all conditions.

The steps are stone, uneven, frequently wet and slippery with moss regardless of the forecast, and there is no shelter along the route. Carry water; there is none on the mountain.
