Sandy Cruz Trailhead
A rainforest ridge walk into the misty heart of Saba
Why Go
Start above Zion's Hill and slip into a cloud-brushed corridor of gumbo-limbo, tree ferns, and orchids — one of the quietest, greenest walks in the Dutch Caribbean.
The Experience
The Sandy Cruz Trail is Saba's classic ridge hike: a rolling, well-shaded track that traces the northern flank of Mount Scenery between Upper Zion's Hill (still known locally as Hell's Gate) and Troy Hill above The Bottom. Unlike the calf-burning summit push up Mount Scenery, Sandy Cruz stays roughly level, weaving through elfin cloud forest, mango groves, and stone-walled remnants of old provision gardens. Expect roughly 2 to 3 hours one-way over 3–4 kilometers, with dramatic ocean panoramas breaking through the canopy whenever the ridge narrows. The path is often quiet enough that the loudest sound is the wind in the mahogany trees and the whistle of the endemic Bridled Quail-dove. It is moderate in difficulty — mostly because of slick clay, root steps, and occasional muddy patches after rain — but there is very little sustained climbing, which makes it the island's most accessible taste of true rainforest.
What to Try
Walk the full traverse from the Zion's Hill trailhead down to Troy Hill and arrange a pickup at the far end (or a taxi back from The Bottom) — it's far more rewarding than doubling back. Along the way, keep an eye out for wild heliconia, dangling philodendrons, land crabs on the trail, and, if you're lucky, the Purple-throated Carib hummingbird working the flowers. Bring a small pair of binoculars for the sea-cliff overlooks toward St. Maarten and Statia on clear days.
Insider Tip
Start early — ideally by 8 a.m. — before the clouds settle onto the ridge and turn the clay to soap. Locals will tell you the trail is at its best the morning after an overnight shower, when the forest is dripping and the light through the canopy is impossibly green, but the mud is still firm underfoot. Hire a licensed Saba Conservation Foundation guide if you want the plant lore; you'll spot ten times more than walking it solo.
The Practical Stuff
Trailhead: JQQ8+RGF, on the road just past Zion's Hill (Hell's Gate). No entry booth on site — pay the small Saba National Park hiking fee at the Trail Shop in Windwardside before you set out. Wear sturdy, grippy shoes (trail runners work; sandals do not), long pants if you're bushwhacking-averse, and carry at least 1.5 L of water and a light rain shell — the cloud forest lives up to its name. Cell coverage is patchy on the ridge. Guides can be booked through the Saba Conservation Foundation. Not stroller- or wheelchair-friendly.
