Blink and you'd miss it, but Fort Bay is where the ferry docks, the dive boats fuel up, and the fishermen unload ΓÇö the beating heart of an island that has no beaches and doesn't need any.
The Experience
Fort Bay sits on Saba's rugged south-west shore, a small artificial harbor carved out of black volcanic rock at the foot of towering cliffs. There's no sand and no promenade ΓÇö this is a working port, and that's exactly the charm. Ferries from St. Maarten (The Edge and the Makana) tie up alongside dive catamarans from Sea Saba and Saba Divers, while fishermen mend nets and locals gossip on the seawall. The scale is almost comically small: the whole harbor could fit inside a shopping-mall parking lot. From here, 'The Road' ΓÇö Saba's famously improbable serpentine ΓÇö snakes up 800 feet of near-vertical cliff to The Bottom and on to Windwardside. Come for the ferry or a dive boat, and you'll see Saba from the water first, the way generations of Sabans arrived home.
What to Try
Book a two-tank dive with Sea Saba or Saba Divers (both operate straight off the pier and access 30+ sites inside the Saba National Marine Park ΓÇö pinnacles, sharks, sea turtles). Ride the ferry in from St. Maarten so you approach the island by sea and see the harbor unfold beneath the cliffs. Grab a cold Carib and grilled mahi at Pop's Place or Ocean Club right on the harbor after your dive. If you're not diving, walk the seawall at golden hour when the fishing boats come in.
Insider Tip
Time your arrival for the mid-afternoon boat return (usually 3ΓÇô4 pm) ΓÇö dive crews are unloading tanks, fishermen are cleaning the day's catch, and Pop's Place fires up. If you're not on a dive charter, wander to the far end of the harbor for the best photo angle back at the cliffs, and don't miss the small memorial plaques honoring the harbor's construction. Fort Bay closes down after sunset and there are no taxis waiting late ΓÇö arrange your ride up 'The Road' in advance, and brace yourself: it's the steepest legal road in the Caribbean.
The Practical Stuff
Location: south-west coast of Saba, at the foot of The Road, roughly 10 minutes below The Bottom and 20 minutes below Windwardside. Access: complimentary shuttles from most Saba accommodations; taxis available but sparse ΓÇö pre-book returns. Ferry: The Edge and Makana ferries from St. Maarten dock here. Facilities: dive shops, small harbor office, decompression chamber, two casual eateries (Pop's Place, Ocean Club ΓÇö hours vary, mostly lunch and drinks). No ATM, no beach, no swimming inside the harbor. Bring cash, sunscreen, and closed shoes if boarding a dive boat. Note: a new Black Rocks Harbor development is in the works, so operations may shift in coming years.
