Hookah on St. Maarten is a Dutch-side habit, and a concentrated one. Everything below sits on or just off Welfare Road, the strip running from Simpson Bay through Cole Bay, so nobody has to cross the island for it.
The spots divide into two kinds, and which one you want depends on the evening you have in mind. A dedicated lounge builds the whole room around the pipe - low seating, a flavour list, a cocktail menu and a DJ on the better nights. Those open late, stay open late, and are where you go when the shisha is the plan. A restaurant that also serves hookah gives you dinner first and a pipe afterwards at the same table, which is the easier call for a group where not everyone smokes. Two practical notes. Expect the $$ band at the restaurants and $$$ at the upscale lounges, with a shared pipe usually priced per session rather than per person. And opening days move around here more than anywhere else on the island - several of these close one weekday, and not the same one - so it is worth a call before you build a whole evening around any single address.
1. WE Lounge — Best for the dedicated hookah lounge
The closest thing on the island to a purpose-built shisha lounge, in Royal Village on Welfare Road. Premium sessions with a proper flavoured-tobacco list, a full cocktail, wine and spirits menu, indoor and outdoor seating and a DJ on selected nights. If you want the pipe to be the point of the evening rather than an afterthought, start here.
Local tip. It runs late rather than early - this is an after-dinner room, not somewhere to arrive at seven expecting a full house.
Worth knowing. The priciest of the five at $$$, and the lowest-rated at 4.1 across 95 reviews - a polished room that not everyone warms to. Our opening times and Google's disagree, so call rather than assume.
2. Yallah Shawarma & Hookah — Best for hookah with the food to match
The only place on the list that puts hookah in its name, and the one where the pairing makes cultural sense: proper Arabic shawarma, kebabs, lamb chops and shish tawook, mezze like hummus, baba ghanoush and fattoush, then Arabic tea and a pipe to finish. Cole Bay, on Union Road, and the highest-rated spot here at 4.9.
Local tip. It keeps restaurant hours rather than lounge hours, opening from late morning - so it is the one option on this list that works for an afternoon pipe.
Worth knowing. Closed Tuesdays, and with 20 reviews it is a small sample however good the score. It is a relaxed dining room, not a late-night lounge.
3. Nova Bar & Lounge — Best for cocktails, DJs and a smaller room
A modern lounge at 69 Welfare Road built around inventive cocktails and smooth hookah sessions, with guest DJs on selected nights and an outdoor area that stays calm when the inside picks up. Promotions run through the week, including free prosecco for groups on Fridays and midnight specials on Saturdays.
Local tip. Evenings from 7pm, and it is closed Sundays - both our record and Google agree on that much.
Worth knowing. It is small and new enough that 13 reviews is all there is to go on, and our record and Google disagree about whether it opens Thursdays.
4. Amore — Best for dinner first, pipe afterwards
A Caribbean-Italian bistro in Puerta del Sol with a separate bar and lounge, which is what earns it a place here: eat properly first - pasta, pizza, seafood, jerk chicken, oxtail - then move next door for hookah and tapas while the lounge turns into a nightlife room with DJs after about 10pm. The dual setup suits a group that wants both halves of an evening in one building.
Local tip. The restaurant side and the lounge side keep different moods, so say which one you want when you book.
Worth knowing. At 4.3 it is rated as a restaurant rather than as a hookah room, and the hookah lives in the lounge area only. Our opening days and Google's do not match, so check before a Tuesday visit.
5. Feestcafe SXM — Best for hookah, cigars and a lagoon view
A Dutch-leaning bar and restaurant on Welfare Road in Cole Bay that serves food, drinks, hookah and cigars together, looking out over the lagoon. Expect a party-minded room with Caribbean and international dance music, drink specials and a crowd that skews grown-up rather than student.
Local tip. It is the only one of the five with a water view, the only one offering cigars alongside the shisha, and it runs to 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Worth knowing. Closed Mondays, and it opens from 9am - this is a bar and restaurant that happens to serve hookah, not a lounge built around it. With 32 reviews it is also the least-documented room on this list.
