Surair Catering Services: The Airline Kitchen Behind Suriname's Skies
The bakery-plus-flight-kitchen tucked beside the runway at Zanderij
Why Go
Most travellers pass through Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport without realising the tray of pastry they nibble on the SLM flight home was baked a stone's throw from where they boarded. Surair Catering Services is Surinam Airways' in-house kitchen at Zanderij, and while it isn't a walk-in restaurant, its cakes, bread and hot meals reach the public through the SLM Pastry & Snack Shop and pre-order counters at the terminal.
The Experience
Surair sits inside the airport perimeter in Zanderij, the tiny inland village that shares its name with the country's international gateway. It is a working flight kitchen rather than a dining room: white-coated staff loading trolleys of galley meals, refrigerated trucks lining up beside parked aircraft, and a pastry team turning out fresh cakes from dawn. For travellers, the way in is the SLM Pastry & Snack Shop, where Surair's baked goods are sold retail alongside coffee. Locals also order whole cakes and platters direct for birthdays, weddings and office events, taking advantage of the airline-grade consistency and food-safety standards.
What to Try
Their fruit-topped cream cakes and Surinamese-style bolo (layer cake) are the flagship items, along with savoury pastries such as pastei and bara-style bites designed to travel well. If you are flying SLM, the hot meal loaded into the galley is theirs too, so a Paramaribo-Amsterdam leg is essentially a tasting flight of Surair's kitchen.
Insider Tip
You cannot rock up to the catering facility itself, but you can pre-order a whole cake by phone (+597 325287) and collect it at the SLM Pastry & Snack Shop or at the terminal on your way out of the country. It is one of the few Zanderij-side pickup options for anyone with an early-morning flight who wants something better than airport-standard snacks.
The Practical Stuff
Location: FR43+RG8, Zanderij, on the grounds of Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport, roughly 45 km south of Paramaribo (about a 1-hour drive). Access: not open to the public as a restaurant; retail via SLM Pastry & Snack Shop and direct pre-order. Phone: +597 325287. Payment: cash SRD preferred; card acceptance at the terminal shop only. Best paired with an SLM flight or with a scheduled airport transfer, since Zanderij has few standalone dining options.
