Riando Appartement Royal Rainville: A Quiet Rainville Base Above the City

An air-conditioned garden hideaway with a pool, tucked into leafy Rainville

Why Go

Trade downtown noise for a private terrace over a palm-shaded pool, five minutes from Waterkant when you actually want to be in the thick of things.

The Experience

Riando sits on Henri J. De Vriesstraat in Rainville, one of Paramaribo's calmer residential pockets away from the honking of Domineestraat. You step through a private entrance into a self-contained apartment: air-con, a fully equipped kitchen, cable TV, and a walk-in shower with slippers waiting. The real draw is outside your door - a garden, an outdoor pool, and enough shade that afternoons feel unhurried even when the equatorial sun is at full tilt. Staff are hands-on in a Surinamese way (warm, no fuss) and can arrange airport transfers or lend you a bicycle to explore. It reads less like a hotel and more like borrowing a friend-of-a-friend's flat for a week.

What to Try

Start mornings with a swim before the heat sets in, then bike or grab a taxi down to Waterkant for roti at a warung and a walk along the Suriname River. Cook in at least one night - the kitchen is fully stocked and the Central Market (about 2.8 km away) is a great excuse to shop for peppers, cassava, and pom ingredients. Come back for sundowners on the terrace: parbo beer, pool view, done.

Insider Tip

Bring cash in SRD or USD - the property is cash-only, and ATMs in Paramaribo can be temperamental with foreign cards, so pull out what you need on arrival day. Also, ask about the bicycle before you book a taxi; Rainville to the historic center is a flat, easy ride and you'll see far more of the wooden colonial architecture on two wheels.

The Practical Stuff

Address: Henri J. De Vriesstraat 2, Paramaribo (Rainville neighborhood). Roughly 5 km from the UNESCO-listed inner city and 2.3 km from Waterkant. Cash payments only. Airport transfers and bike rental available on request. Free WiFi, air-con, private bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, outdoor pool and garden on site.

Pair It With

  • Waterkant — The riverside strip is the heart of old Paramaribo - colonial timber buildings, food stalls, and the launching point for boat trips; a quick ride from Rainville.
  • Central Market (Centrale Markt) — About 2.8 km away and the best place to stock your Riando kitchen with Surinamese produce, spices, and street snacks.
  • 168 Restaurant Guide — One of the closer sit-down options when you don't feel like cooking, walkable for a casual dinner near the apartment.
  • 4x4xJankie Guide — Handy neighbor for renting a vehicle if you plan day trips out to Commewijne plantations or the interior.
