The Experience
Walk in and you'll find the familiar Surinamese slijterij setup: a modest counter, walls lined with rum, whisky, and imported spirits, and coolers humming with beer that has been chilled to genuinely cold - a small mercy in the humid Wanica heat. Service is transactional and friendly in the local Sranan-and-Dutch blend, and if you time it right in the late afternoon (roughly 16:00-18:00) you may catch the shop at its liveliest, when neighbors, taxi drivers, and workers rolling home from Paramaribo pop in for take-away bottles. There is no seating, no bar theatre, no cocktails - this is a slijterij in the truest Dutch-Surinamese sense: a place to buy, not to linger. The charm is in the everyday-ness of it: fluorescent light on glass, a chalkboard price or two, a quick exchange, and you're back out on the Weythingweg with your paper bag.
What to Try
Stick with what Suriname does well. Borgoe 8 or Borgoe Extra rum is the local benchmark - smooth, molasses-rich, and cheaper here than anywhere back home. A crate (or a single tall bottle) of ice-cold Parbo Bier is the default beer run, and Djogo (the oversized 1-litre Parbo bottle) is the authentic move if you're heading to a group setting. Black Cat rum or Marienburg (an eye-watering 90% cane spirit) are for the curious or the reckless. For something softer, ask for a chilled bottle of Fernandes soft drink - the local orange, ginger beer, or grenadine flavours are Suriname in a glass.

Buy your bottles before you head deeper into the interior. Prices climb sharply once you pass Leiding toward the resorts along the Suriname River and the road to the interior, and stock becomes hit-or-miss. Bring small SRD notes - it speeds up the transaction and is appreciated, and don't be surprised if the shutters come down early after dark; Weythingweg slijterijen tend to close on the cautious side rather than the posted side.

Location: Commissaris Weythingweg 275, Leiding, Wanica district, roughly a 20-25 minute drive south from central Paramaribo. Easiest reached by car or taxi - there's no meaningful public transport service on this stretch beyond the occasional wagi (shared minibus). Cash (SRD) is king; some slijterijen take USD or EUR at a rough rate but don't count on card. Take-away only - no on-site consumption. Best visited in daylight or the early evening.
