Why Go

Out where the island road loops past sugar-cane ruins and the Atlantic crashes against volcanic shoreline, the village of Saddlers is anchored by its secondary school ΓÇö a modern campus opened in September 2021 that has become the pride of Saint John Capisterre parish. In September 2025 it was officially renamed the Dr. Denzil Llewellyn Douglas Secondary School, honouring the long-serving former Prime Minister who hails from this corner of the island.

The Experience

This is a working school and community institution rather than a tourist attraction, but it tells you a lot about real Kittitian life beyond the resorts. Driving the scenic north-island loop, you'll pass its bright, purpose-built campus serving students from the surrounding rural villages of the Capisterre region. The school is known locally for its annual fifth-form symposium, sports days and community events, and the surrounding village scene ΓÇö schoolchildren in uniform, roadside fruit stalls, church bells ΓÇö offers an authentic slice of everyday island rhythm that most visitors never see.

What to Try

If you're circling the island by rental car or on an island tour, time your drive through Saddlers with a stop at nearby Black Rocks, the dramatic lava-formed coastline just along the coast ΓÇö vendors there sometimes sell cold drinks and local snacks. Passing the school at opening or dismissal time gives you a genuine glimpse of village life in motion.

Insider Tip

Locals still call it 'Saddlers Secondary' despite the 2025 renaming ΓÇö use either name and people will know exactly what you mean. If you're interested in the school's community events or educational outreach, contact the school directly or check the St. Kitts Ministry of Education's announcements; visitors should not enter the campus unannounced, as it is an active school.
