Wilhelmina Park
Statia's leafy town-square breather in Upper Oranjestad
Why Go
A shaded pocket of green in the heart of Upper Town where locals swing by for a chess match, a few reps on the outdoor gym, or just to catch the trade winds rolling off the Caribbean.
The Experience
Wilhelmina Park is the closest thing Oranjestad has to a village living room. Set among Upper Town's pastel colonial buildings just a short stroll from Fort Oranje and the historic center, it's a small, tree-shaded square rather than a manicured attraction. Benches sit under the canopy, weather-proof fitness equipment lines one edge, and a handful of chess and checkers tables (installed in 2020 as Statia's first outdoor chess park) draw a rotating cast of regulars. Come at sunrise to see Statians squeezing in a workout before the heat, or late afternoon when the light softens and neighbors drift over to talk politics, dominoes and cricket. It's less a 'sight' and more a place to feel the island's slow, communal rhythm for twenty unhurried minutes.
What to Try
Challenge a local to a game of chess or checkers at the outdoor boards, put in a set on the calisthenics equipment, or simply grab a bench in the shade with a cold Statia Chill from a nearby shop and watch daily life unfold. Pair the visit with a wander through Upper Town's cobbled lanes and a peek at the ruined synagogue Honen Dalim and Dutch Reformed Church tower a few blocks away.
Insider Tip
Mornings before 9am and the hour before sunset are the sweet spots, both for cooler temperatures and for catching the park at its most social. Bring small bills if you want to tip anyone who lends you a chess set, and don't skip the short walk to the cliff-edge behind Fort Oranje for one of Statia's best free views over the roadstead.
The Practical Stuff
Free and open 24/7 as a public park; no ticket, no gate. Located in Upper Town Oranjestad, roughly a 5-minute walk from Fort Oranje and easily reached on foot from any Upper Town guesthouse. Limited street parking nearby. Minimal shade structures beyond the trees, so bring water, sunscreen and a hat. No on-site facilities, restrooms or vendors — grab drinks or a bite at Bacchanalia or another Upper Town cafe before you go.
