A near-vertical drop-off at the foot of the Quill where Statia's volcanic geology plunges into open blue
Why Go
Most Statia dives are lava boulders and reef mounds ΓÇö White Wall is different. Here the seabed simply falls away, a sheer face descending well past recreational limits, framed by the shadow of the Quill volcano rising above.
The Experience
You drop in over shallow sand and coral, then finn a short distance until the bottom disappears. What follows is one of the most dramatic dives in the Sint Eustatius National Marine Park: a vertical wall streaked with encrusting sponges, black coral, and gorgonians, with the blue abyss on one shoulder and volcanic rock on the other. Currents can push through, so it's typically run as a drift along the face. Turtles cruise the mid-depths, reef sharks patrol below, and schools of horse-eye jack hang in the current lines. Because Statia sees so few divers ΓÇö often you'll be the only boat on a site ΓÇö the fish are curious rather than skittish.
What to Try
Ask your dive guide to time the descent so you hit the wall at slack, then drift the full length of the face before working your way back up the shallower shelf for your safety stop. Bring a torch even in daylight ΓÇö the crevices along the wall hide lobster, moray eels, and the occasional nurse shark tucked into an overhang.
Insider Tip
White Wall is depth-serious ΓÇö the top of the wall sits around 20m and it keeps going, so this is an advanced-rated site with a strict no-decompression plan. Book it as your first dive of the day when you're freshest, and ask whichever operator you go with (Golden Rock or Scubaqua both run it) to pair it with a shallower second dive like Aquarium or Blue Bead Hole for a classic Statia one-two.
The Practical Stuff
You have to book through one of Statia's two dive operators ΓÇö there's no shore access. All divers pay the STENAPA marine park fee (about US$6/dive or US$30/year), which is added to your dive package. Bring proof of certification (Advanced Open Water or equivalent recommended given depth), a logbook if you have one, and a 3mm wetsuit is plenty year-round. Boats leave from Lower Town at Gallows Bay; morning departures usually have the calmest surface conditions.
