Villa Frangipani, Boutique Rooms
A Balinese-style hideaway steps from Oranjestad's cobblestone lanes
Why Go
Five airy suites, a private pool, and hammocks strung under the frangipani trees make this Knippenga Avenue villa feel less like a hotel and more like a friend's tropical hideaway on Statia's quiet upper town.
The Experience
Tucked onto Knippenga Avenue in Oranjestad, Villa Frangipani takes its cues from Bali rather than the colonial pastels you'll see downtown. The main house wraps around a garden courtyard where an outdoor pool, a shaded terrace, a barbecue pit and a slow-swinging porch chair invite you to do very little between dive trips and volcano hikes. Each of the five bedrooms has its own bathroom, and communal lounges are dressed in carved wood, batik textiles and low lantern light, so it reads more boutique guest house than resort. Because Statia only sees a trickle of travellers, mornings here are ridiculously peaceful – birds in the frangipanis, the muted clang of a church bell, and the smell of coffee drifting from the shared kitchen. It has earned a Travelers' Choice nod for a reason: the vibe is quiet, considered, and completely unhurried.
What to Try
Claim the porch swing at golden hour with a cold Carib – the light through the garden is the property's best amenity. Fire up the shared BBQ after a dive day; guests routinely pool their catch or produce hauled back from the Duggins supermarket. If you can, book the room with the largest private terrace so you have your own hammock spot for post-Quill-hike naps.
Insider Tip
Statia has no beach clubs and almost no taxis after dark, so ask the villa in advance to arrange an airport pickup and a rental car – the walk down into Lower Town is beautiful in daylight but pitch-black at night, and you'll want wheels to reach the Quill trailhead, Zeelandia Beach and the dive shops on Bay Road.
The Practical Stuff
Address: Knippenga Avenue 14, Oranjestad, St. Eustatius (Caribbean Netherlands). Five en-suite boutique rooms in a Balinese-styled villa with outdoor pool, garden, shared lounge, BBQ, free Wi-Fi and free private parking. Rates typically start around US$215/night; cash (USD) is widely used on Statia but the villa accepts card bookings via major OTAs. Reception is host-run, so message ahead for check-in windows, dietary needs and dive-package coordination.
Pair It With
- Aquarium Dive Site — One of Statia's signature reef dives, easy to slot into a morning before returning to the villa's pool for a lazy afternoon.
- The Quill National Park — The dormant volcano hike is Statia's must-do; Villa Frangipani's Oranjestad location puts you a short drive from the trailhead and a hot shower after.
- Zeelandia Beach Guide — Wild, empty Atlantic sand for sunset walks – a perfect low-key counterpoint to a boutique-villa morning.
- Historic Lower Town & Fort Oranje — Wander the ruins of the 18th-century warehouses and the fort walls, then climb the Bay Path back up to the villa for dinner on the terrace.
