Tucked on Rosemary Lane in Oranjestad, the New Challenges Foundation is where Statians of every age come to change their trajectory. On any given afternoon you'll hear a GED tutoring session in one classroom, a Cambridge English cohort practicing in another, and the clatter of QuickBooks lessons down the hall. Outside, the SKJ youth employment cohort might be tending the hydroponics garden or heading off to a job-coaching visit. It's small, unpretentious, and unmistakably alive — a working nerve center for adult education on an island where formal training options are limited. Visitors who stop in (respectfully, and ideally by appointment) get a rare, honest look at how a tiny community invests in itself.
What to Try
Ask about the SKJ youth program — it pairs unemployed young adults with a job coach and a placement — or the hydroponics training, which is teaching a new generation to grow food on volcanic soil. If your timing is right, they welcome supply donations (books, laptops, classroom materials) and are open to conversations with visiting educators, tradespeople, or professionals willing to share expertise.
