Why Go
One small foundation looks after nearly everything that makes St. Eustatius extraordinary: the cloud-forested crater of The Quill, a marine park that rings the entire island, and a botanical garden tucked against the volcano's slopes. Stop by their Gallows Bay visitor centre and the whole island opens up.
The Experience
STENAPA (the St. Eustatius National Parks Foundation) is the non-profit that manages The Quill/Boven National Park — the first national park established in the Dutch Caribbean — the Statia National Marine Park, and the Miriam C. Schmidt Botanical Garden. Their visitor centre sits near the harbour at Gallows Bay, and it's the natural first stop for anyone planning to hike or dive. Rangers hand out trail maps, explain current conditions on the Quill's crater and rim routes, and sell the nature tags that fund conservation work. Beyond admin, STENAPA runs sea turtle nesting patrols on Zeelandia Beach, coral and reef monitoring, invasive species control, and a well-regarded volunteer and intern programme that draws conservationists from around the world.
What to Try
Pick up a trail tag and hike The Quill: the main trail to the crater rim takes about 45–60 minutes through dry forest that turns lush as you climb, and the descent into the crater itself rewards you with towering trees and total quiet. Divers should get their marine park tag here before exploring Statia's protected reefs and wrecks. In turtle season (roughly March–November), ask about joining a guided night patrol on Zeelandia Beach — watching a nesting sea turtle with the rangers is the kind of experience Statia does better than almost anywhere.
Insider Tip
Visit the office early in the morning before setting out — rangers know exactly which trails are clear after rain and where the orientation for hikes and dives happens, and they'll often share sightings (orchids blooming in the crater, turtle activity) that never make it into any guidebook. The Miriam C. Schmidt Botanical Garden on the Quill's southeastern flank is wonderfully overlooked; you may have its terraces and Atlantic views entirely to yourself.
The Practical Stuff
The visitor centre is at Gallows Bay, near the harbour in Lower Town, Oranjestad — a short walk from the dive shops. It's generally open weekday business hours; hiking and diving nature fees are payable there (dive shops also sell marine park tags). Wear proper shoes for the Quill, bring water, and start hikes early to beat the heat. The island is tiny: you're 10 minutes by car from F.D. Roosevelt Airport.
