The Experience
Statia Divers is the in-house dive center at Golden Rock Resort and functions as the island's flagship operator. Days start with a barefoot walk down to the cliffside dive shack, where the on-boat crew handles gear assembly, tank transfers, and refreshments — the 'valet dive' style the resort is known for. Two boats (Patricia, 16 divers; Stormy, 22) shuttle you across the leeward side of the island in five to twenty minutes, so surface intervals are short and most days you're back by lunch with two tanks logged. Because St. Eustatius sees only a trickle of visitors, briefings feel more like a conversation than a lecture: the guides ask what you want to see — macro critters, wrecks, wall drops, or the volcanic lava flows unique to Statia — and build the day around it. ScubaPro rental gear is included, Nitrox is free for EANx-certified divers, and the reef itself is inside a protected marine park, so coral cover, sponge growth, and fish density are in a league that Caribbean regulars notice immediately.
What to Try
Book the two-tank morning boat and ask your guide to combine Aquarium (turtles, a resident octopus, and macro life on a shallow patch reef) with Double Wreck, where two 18th-century merchant ships collapsed into a single ballast-stone reef circled by rays. If you have the certification, add an afternoon dive on one of the volcanic lava flow sites — the underwater topography is genuinely unlike anywhere else in the Dutch Caribbean. Non-divers can jump on the boat for the ride or take a Discover Scuba session off the resort's stretch of coast.
Insider Tip
Nitrox is complimentary if you're EANx-certified, but almost no one asks for it on their first day — request it up front and you'll get noticeably longer bottom times on the 25-metre wreck dives without paying a surcharge. Also worth knowing: the crew will happily pick you up from any Oranjestad accommodation if you're not staying at Golden Rock, but you have to arrange it the evening before, not morning-of.
The Practical Stuff
Located at Behind the Mountain #21 inside Golden Rock Resort on the windward coast, about a 10-minute drive from Oranjestad and F.D. Roosevelt Airport. Reachable by rental car, taxi, or resort shuttle. A valid St. Eustatius Marine Park tag (sold on-site) is required for every diver — one-day and annual options available. Bring your C-card and, if applicable, Nitrox certification; log book optional but appreciated. Boats depart mornings and early afternoons; advance booking is essential in high season as group sizes are deliberately kept small.
