Why Go

On an island this small, a set of keys is really a permission slip — go from the Quill trailhead to Zeelandia's black sand to a sunset at Fort Oranje without ever checking a bus schedule.

The Experience

Statia Car Rental operates out of a low-key office on Paramiraweg, just off the main road threading through Oranjestad. There's no polished airport counter or corporate uniform here — this is a family-run operation where a WhatsApp message often gets a faster response than an email, and the person handing you the keys is usually the same person who cleaned the car that morning. Their fleet skews practical for Statia's realities: compact hatchbacks for zipping through the narrow Upper Town lanes, midsize SUVs with enough clearance for the pot-holed road out to Venus Bay, and a few full-size sedans if you're rolling deep with dive gear and family. Scooters round out the mix for solo travelers who want the wind in their face on the coast road. Expect a paperwork-light handover, a quick walkaround, and honest advice about which roads reward four-wheel drive and which are perfectly fine in a compact.

What to Try

Ask about a midsize SUV if the Quill, Boven, or Venus Bay are on your itinerary — the extra clearance matters more than the horsepower. Solo travelers staying a couple of days should price out a scooter; parking in Upper Town is easier and the 30 km/h island speed limit means you're not missing much. If you're arriving on a Winair morning flight, request a car staged at F.D. Roosevelt Airport rather than a taxi-then-pickup shuffle — worth confirming over WhatsApp in advance.

Insider Tip

Fuel up before you rent-return. Statia has only a couple of stations and they keep short, unpredictable hours (often closed Sundays and by early evening). Locals will tell you: if you pass an open pump with a half-empty tank, stop.

The Practical Stuff

Address: Paramiraweg 39, Oranjestad, Sint Eustatius. Phone/WhatsApp: +599 319 1211. Email: reservering@statiarental.com. Website: statiarental.com. Hours aren't publicly posted — book ahead by email or WhatsApp, especially around flight arrivals or dive-group weeks. Bring your home driver's license (no international permit required for stays under six months). Drive on the right; island speed limit is 30–50 km/h.

Pair It With

  • Baby Beach Guide — One of the few sandy swim spots on Statia and firmly a 'you need a car' destination — the drive out on rough coastal track is exactly why you rented the SUV.
  • Aquarium Dive Site — Book with a local dive op, then use your rental to shuttle tanks and gear between your guesthouse and the harbor without waiting on rides.
  • Alvin V Courtar Park Guide — An easy in-town stop to stretch legs and grab bearings on day one before venturing out to the Quill or the north-coast beaches.
  • A Quiet Getaway - One-Bedroom Apartment Guide — Self-catering stays pair naturally with a rental car — you'll want wheels for the supermarket run and evening drives to dinner in Lower Town.
