Why Go
On an eight-square-mile island where the nearest full-service hospital is a plane ride away in St. Maarten, this modest facility on H.M. Queen Beatrix Road is the safety net for every diver, hiker, and Quill-summiting traveler who set foot on Statia. The main operation actually runs out of a 'Hospitainer' — a purpose-built modular container hospital originally erected during COVID — parked directly across the street from the older Queen Beatrix Medical Center building. It's small, it's unfussy, and it's exactly the kind of place you're grateful to know exists before you need it.
The Experience
Walk in and you'll find a compact, clean, brightly lit clinic staffed by a mix of Dutch, Statian, and international nurses and GPs who tend to know everyone on the island by first name. English is spoken universally alongside Dutch and Papiamento. The vibe is unhurried Caribbean-meets-Dutch-efficiency: expect a short intake conversation, cash- or card-friendly billing for visitors, and reception staff who will happily point you toward the pharmacy next door or walk you through what your travel insurance needs. For anything beyond primary care — think orthopedic surgery, cardiac events, serious dive accidents — SEHCF coordinates medevac transfers to St. Maarten or Colombia.
What to Try
Know before you go: they handle the everyday traveler stuff — cut feet from coral, sea-urchin spines, ear infections after too many dives, sunstroke, prescription refills, tetanus boosters, and rabies post-exposure care. There's a lab on-site for basic bloodwork and a small pharmacy for common medications. The ER runs 24/7, and if you're a diver, staff are familiar with barotrauma protocols and the closest hyperbaric chamber (Saba, a short flight away). Bring your passport, insurance card, and any prescription bottles you're already using.

Save +599 318 2211 in your phone the moment you land — it's the SEHCF main line and doubles as the emergency number on Statia (there's no 911-style system here). If you're diving with STENAPA or one of the local operators, they already know the drill and will call ahead for you; that pre-call can save 20 minutes at intake. Also worth knowing: the Hospitainer entrance is around the side of the compound, not through the older medical-center facade — first-time visitors always get this wrong.
The Practical Stuff
Location: H.M. Queen Beatrix Road 25, Oranjestad (Upper Town), a 5-minute walk from the F.D. Roosevelt Airport road and central Oranjestad. Clinic hours: Monday–Friday 7:30 AM–3:30 PM for walk-in appointments. Emergency room: open 24/7, 365 days a year. Payment: credit cards and cash (USD, the local currency) accepted; travelers should expect to pay up front and claim back through insurance. Parking is free on-site. Pharmacy is co-located.
