The St. Eustatius Health Care Foundation runs the Queen Beatrix Medical Center — a compact hospital, GP clinic, lab, maternity ward, and ambulance base rolled into one — and it is genuinely the entire safety net for the roughly 3,200 people who live here and every diver, hiker, and yachtie passing through.
The Experience
Don't picture a mainland ER — picture a friendly island clinic where the same nurse who checks your blood pressure might wave at you later in the Mazinga Gift Shop. Walk-ins for non-emergencies go through the Out-Patient Department during clinic hours (7:30 AM – 3:30 PM), where general practitioners handle everything primary-care. After hours, the 24/7 emergency line takes over, with a small ambulance service that can reach any point on Statia in under 15 minutes. Serious cases (major trauma, cardiac events, complicated dive injuries) are stabilised here and then medevaced by air to Sint Maarten or Guadeloupe — so this is very much a first-response and stabilisation facility, not a tertiary hospital. English and Dutch are spoken fluently; Papiamentu and Spanish are common too.
What to Try
If you're a diver — and most visitors to Statia are — introduce yourself to the front desk on arrival and confirm the current on-call arrangement for decompression illness; the nearest recompression chamber is on Saba, and SEHCF coordinates the transfer. For prescription refills, bring the original packaging plus a doctor's note: the on-site pharmacy stocks common medications but specialty drugs may need to be ordered from St. Maarten. The medical lab handles standard bloodwork, malaria smears, and pregnancy tests same-day. Expectant travellers can access midwife-led prenatal check-ins at the maternity department.

Travel-insurance card and passport at the ready speeds up intake enormously — SEHCF bills most European insurers directly but US visitors typically pay out of pocket (card accepted) and claim reimbursement later. Costs are dramatically lower than a US ER visit.
