Why Go
Tucked into the low, terracotta-roofed municipal building on Van Tonningenweg, right beside Customs on the town dock, the Harbor Office is where every yacht, dinghy skipper and dive-bound visitor legally begins their Statia stay. It is bureaucratic, friendly, and refreshingly quick by Caribbean standards — most captains are cleared, fee-paid and walking up the Slave Path toward Fort Oranje within twenty minutes of tying up.
The Experience
Walk in from the pier and you will find a modest counter staffed by port officers who juggle VHF radio calls, cruise-ship agents and yacht crews all morning. The room is functional — fluorescent lighting, tariff sheets pinned to the wall, a printer that occasionally protests the humidity — but the staff are patient, bilingual (Dutch and English) and genuinely helpful about anchorages, weather, and where to grab lunch afterwards. Cruise passengers rarely need to visit; this office is squarely for sailors, private boaters, and anyone who needs to sort a mooring, pay the Marine Park environmental fee, or ask about small-boat access to the Chien Tong and Charles Brown wreck dives just offshore.
What to Try
Hail 'Statia Port Control' on VHF Channel 16 before you arrive so your paperwork is half-done by the time you step ashore. Ask the officer on duty for the current mooring assignment in the National Marine Park anchorage — the sandy patches south of the pier hold best and keep you clear of the reef. If you are a diver, pick up your $6 single-dive or $30 annual Marine Park tag here or confirm it was included in your dive-shop package. Grab the free island map from the counter; it marks the Quill hiking trailheads and the historic Lower Town ruins along the beach.
Insider Tip
Bring exact cash (USD is fine, the official currency here) and your ship's papers, passports and last port clearance in a single dry folder — the office charges harbor fees by the night or week and card readers are unreliable when the island's connectivity dips. Time your visit for 8:30–10:00 AM: cruise-tender days (check the schedule board outside) can jam the counter, and the office closes sharply at 5:00 PM with no after-hours clearance.
