Statia is the Caribbean island most travelers have never heard of — no cruise crowds, no resort strip, just 21 square kilometers of dive-worthy reefs, a dormant volcano to hike, and 18th-century Dutch ruins tumbling down to the sea. This two-bedroom apartment plants you right in the middle of it all, on the cliff-edge town of Oranjestad, where the sun goes down over the water and the whole island seems to exhale.
The Experience
You settle in on the terrace with a cold drink as the sky over the Caribbean shifts through gold, coral, and violet — the kind of sunset that makes you forget to check your phone. The apartment feels genuinely lived-in rather than staged: two proper bedrooms, air conditioning that actually works after a hot day on the trails, a washer for salty swimwear, and enough kitchen space to cook whatever you picked up at the little grocery down the road. Wake up early and drive (or catch a lift) to the trailhead for The Quill, the dormant volcano whose crater is now a hushed rainforest full of giant kapok trees and land crabs — the Crater Trail down into the cone is the one to do. Back in town, book a two-tank dive with Scubaqua or Golden Rock Dive & Nature Resort; the marine park's shipwrecks and volcanic pinnacles are the reason serious divers make the trip. Wander the ruins of Fort Oranje at golden hour, poke around the St. Eustatius Historical Foundation Museum for the story of the island's brief moment as the richest trading port in the Americas, and end the week at Oranjestad's Friday-night boardwalk fete for local food, soca, and cold Caribs with everyone on the island.

Statia has almost no taxis and no ride-share — arrange a rental car before you fly in, especially for weekend arrivals when the two rental desks at the airport (Antillean Horde and ARC among them) can be picked clean. And bring cash: several of the best local roti stands, beach bars, and dive-boat tips don't take cards, and the island's lone ATM has been known to run dry over holiday weekends.
