Signal Hill: Statia's Quiet Volcanic Ridge
A weathered cinder cone in the north with big views and a rare endemic vine
Why Go
Everyone flies to Statia for the Quill, the perfect green volcano crouched at the south end of the island. Almost nobody hikes Signal Hill, its lonely sibling up north ΓÇö which is exactly why it's the most under-loved viewpoint in the Caribbean Netherlands. 234 metres of red-oxidised andesite, one narrow loop trail, and views that stretch clear across the ocean to Saba on a bright day.
The Experience
Signal Hill is the eroded stump of a volcano that once rose 600 metres before roughly 1.6 million years of weather took it down to a rust-coloured ridge. The hike itself is short ΓÇö locals reckon on a loop of about 4 kilometres ΓÇö but the north of Statia is arid, exposed and treeless, so it feels wilder and quieter than the lush Quill trails. You climb through low thorny scrub, grasses, and cactus, with the trade wind pushing steadily off the Atlantic. From the higher stretches Oranjestad's tin roofs and the oil terminal shrink to model-village scale below, and on a clear morning Saba's dark cone floats offshore like a mirage. Because so few visitors bother with the northern hills, you can easily do the whole loop without meeting another soul ΓÇö just tropicbirds overhead and lizards scattering off the path.
What to Try
Look down at the ground as much as you look out at the view. Signal Hill is one of the only places in the world where the endemic Statia Morning Glory (a purple-flowered creeper in the Convolvulaceae family) grows wild along the slopes. The northern hills' distinctive rusty-red rock is weathered andesite, oxidised by 1.6 million years of Caribbean sun and salt ΓÇö worth stopping to notice up close. Try to time your summit push for the golden hour before sunset when the whole northern plain glows terracotta.

Sign in at the STENAPA office in Oranjestad before you go (or call +599-318-2884) ΓÇö the northern trail network is sparsely marked, the Signal Hill route is officially still 'to be updated' on the parks website, and a $6 hiking tag helps fund the park. Bring 1.5 L of water per person minimum, sturdy grip shoes (the volcanic scree slides), and start before 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m. ΓÇö there is no shade on this hill, and midday sun on the exposed ridge is brutal.
The Practical Stuff
Access is via the Zeelandia Road side of the Boven / Quill National Park in Statia's arid north; you'll want a rental car or a lift, as it's a long uphill walk from Oranjestad. Allow 2ΓÇô3 hours for the round trip including photo stops. No entry gate, but purchase the national park hiking tag from STENAPA or a local dive shop. No facilities, no water, no shade ΓÇö pack everything in and out. Trail can be slippery for a day or two after rain. Solo hiking is fine but let someone know your plan.
