Why Go
Most visitors know Statia for the Quill volcano to the south, but the island's forgotten half rises to the north in a cluster of arid hills called Boven — and the very tip is a windswept, cactus-studded lookout that feels like the end of the Caribbean map.
The Experience
Reaching the northernmost point isn't a viewpoint you drive to — it's the reward at the far end of the Boven Trail, deep inside Quill/Boven National Park. From Venus Bay on the eastern shore, a rough, sometimes-faint footpath climbs north through dry forest, thorn scrub, and the crumbling stone ruins of a 19th-century sisal plantation and distillery. As you gain elevation, the vegetation thins to grassland and columnar cacti, and iguanas rattle off the trail. Crest the ridge and the whole northern coastline opens up: sheer cliffs plunging into deep blue, Saba floating on the horizon to the northwest, St. Kitts to the southeast, and, turning back, an unobstructed sightline straight down the spine of the island to the perfect green cone of the Quill. It's raw, quiet, and almost always empty — you'll likely have the entire northern tip to yourself.
What to Try
Time the walk so you're at the top mid-morning, when light hits the Quill from the east and Saba is sharpest against the sky. Detour off the main track to poke around the sisal ruins — old stone walls, a boiler, and fragments of the distillery are scattered in the brush. Bring binoculars: red-billed tropicbirds nest in the cliffs and frigatebirds ride the updrafts along the edge. Sit on the picnic table above Venus Bay on the way back down for the Atlantic swell rolling in against the black rocks.
Insider Tip
Register (and pay the small nature fee) at the STENAPA National Parks office in Oranjestad before you go — they'll hand you the current trail map, and staff will tell you which side trails are washed out, since the northern loop shifts season to season. Cell signal drops out on the ridge, so download an offline map, and go with a partner: the trail is poorly marked past the sisal ruins and it's easy to lose the line on the way back.
The Practical Stuff
Access is via the Boven Trail from Venus Bay, on the northeast coast about a 10-minute drive from Oranjestad — a rental car or taxi drop-off is essential as there's no public transport. Plan on 2.5–3.5 hours round trip with photo stops; the climb is moderate but relentless in the sun. Wear closed-toe hiking shoes (loose rock, cactus spines, and the occasional agave), long pants help, and carry at least 1.5–2 liters of water per person — there's no shade and no water on the trail. Best hiked early morning or late afternoon; avoid midday and skip it entirely after heavy rain when the clay turns slick.
