Mount Mazinga: Statia's Highest Point on The Quill
Rope-assisted scramble to the roof of the Dutch Caribbean's sleeping volcano.
Why Go
At 601 meters, Mount Mazinga is the highest peak on Sint Eustatius and the second-highest point in the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands, poking out above the crater rim of The Quill, a dormant stratovolcano that dominates the south end of the island. Most day-trippers turn back at the crater rim; the ones who push on to Mazinga get a private, breeze-cooled panorama that stretches from Saba's silhouette to the sugar-white flats of St. Kitts.
The Experience
You start at the trailhead on the outskirts of Oranjestad, scan the QR code to pay the National Parks fee, and climb the well-worn Quill Trail through a shady canopy of gumbo-limbo and mango. It's a steady grunt rather than a technical climb, and land crabs skitter across the path as you gain altitude. About 45 minutes in you hit the crater rim junction, where most hikers descend into the caldera. Turning right onto the Mazinga Trail changes the whole character of the hike: the path narrows, roots and volcanic rock take over, and short sections are rigged with fixed ropes and rough-cut rock steps. The last push is a genuine scramble, using your hands as much as your feet, but the ridge suddenly opens above the treeline and the reward lands all at once - the whole crater yawns below you, and the Caribbean spreads out on every side.
What to Try
Do the full loop: summit Mazinga first while your legs are fresh, then drop back down and detour into the crater itself to walk among the giant silk-cotton trees on the caldera floor. It turns a moderate morning hike into a proper half-day adventure and shows you Statia's two very different volcanic landscapes - the exposed ridge and the rainforest bowl - in one go.
Insider Tip
Set out no later than 7:30 AM. The Quill traps humidity like a greenhouse by mid-morning and the rope sections get slick when afternoon clouds roll in over the summit. Locals also know that the ridge is one of the best migratory-bird lookouts on the island between September and November - bring binoculars, not just a camera.
The Practical Stuff
Access is via the Quill trailhead on Rosemary Lane, a 15-minute walk uphill from Oranjestad's Upper Town. Entry is USD $10 per person (cash or QR-code payment at the trailhead), valid for one calendar year across all STENAPA trails; kids under 8 are free. Allow 3-4 hours round-trip to Mazinga's summit, longer if you add the crater floor. Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person, sturdy closed-toe shoes with real grip (trail runners are borderline), sun protection for the exposed summit, and gloves if you don't like grabbing rough rope. There's no shade at the top and no water anywhere on the trail. In wet weather (typically Sept-Nov) the final scramble is genuinely dangerous - skip Mazinga and enjoy the crater rim instead.
