You'll find GIS tucked into Upper Town Oranjestad on Kennip Road, a short walk from Fort Oranje and the government complex. It's a small, low-key office — no queue system, no fanfare, just staff who handle press releases, the government's social channels, and public inquiries for Statia's roughly 3,200 residents. Walk-ins during weekday office hours are the norm; expect a friendly Statian welcome, a mix of English, Dutch and Papiamento in the background, and the kind of face-to-face help that has quietly disappeared in bigger places. If you're a journalist, researcher, cruise passenger with a specific question, or a long-stay visitor sorting paperwork, this is often the fastest unlock on the island.
What to Try
Ask for the current schedule of official public events (King's Day, Statia Day on 16 November, Emancipation Day observances) — GIS coordinates the announcements and can point you to what's actually happening versus what's just posted online. They can also confirm opening hours for other government services (Census Office, Kadaster, the harbour office) which shift around holidays, and steer you to the right desk if you're trying to reach a specific department in the Mazinga Complex nearby.

Time your visit for mid-morning on a weekday and bring a written question or the name of the department you're trying to reach — Statia runs on relationships, and a polite, specific ask gets you a phone number and a name to drop, which is worth ten emails into the void. Don't show up on a Dutch public holiday; the whole administrative quarter of Upper Town effectively shuts.

Dress is casual but tidy; sleeveless beachwear is frowned upon in government buildings across the Dutch Caribbean.
