For decades, Sint Eustatius was the Caribbean's best-kept secret ΓÇö a diver's island with no real luxury bed to fall into after a day underwater. Then in late 2021, Golden Rock Resort opened on a breezy ridge between the dormant Quill volcano and the Atlantic, becoming the largest hospitality project in the island's history and, overnight, the only upscale place to stay on Statia.
The Experience
Golden Rock feels less like a hotel and more like a small, self-contained hill village. A little open-air train shuttles guests between 75 pastel-toned cottages, villas and suites scattered across manicured grounds, past a greenhouse, a solar park, mini-golf holes and padel courts. Days here settle into a rhythm: sunrise coffee on your terrace with the Quill looming green behind you, a morning dive with the on-site Statia Divers crew on some of the Caribbean's healthiest reefs and Dutch shipwrecks, a long lunch at Bobbie's Beach Club perched over the property's dramatic man-made cliff-edge lagoon (30 feet deep, ocean-fed, and unlike anything else in the region), then dinner under the octagonal roof of Breeze restaurant as the volcano fades to silhouette. The whole place is Green Globe and Green Key certified, so the barefoot-luxe polish comes without eco-guilt.
What to Try
Book at least one Stay-and-Dive package ΓÇö Statia Divers runs the operation out of the resort and the sites (the Charles Brown wreck, Double Wreck, and the coral gardens locals just call the Aquarium) rival anything in the Dutch Caribbean without the crowds. Off the water, splurge on a treatment at The Rock Spa, walk the 17-hole mini-golf loop at golden hour, and set aside a morning for the guided Quill volcano hike straight up into the rainforested crater. At the restaurants, order the fresh-catch ceviche and a rum-forward cocktail at Bobbie's, and don't skip Breeze's tasting-style dinners built around local produce from the on-property greenhouse.

That 'very long unpaved road' guests complain about in reviews? It's actually the best thing about arriving here ΓÇö but rent the highest-clearance 4x4 you can get on the island (a compact sedan will scrape) and time your first drive up for daylight. Also: rooms on the upper ridge get the Quill view, rooms lower down get the ocean view. If you can only pick one, take the Quill side ΓÇö the volcano at sunrise is the money shot everyone comes home talking about.
