Chez Famous sits on the quiet edge of Oranjestad on Sint Eustatius — an island of roughly 3,000 people where roosters outnumber tourists and the loudest sound most nights is the trade wind rattling a palm frond. The Experience
Statia does not do resort. Chez Famous fits that tone: a small, unassuming property tucked into Oranjestad's grid of pastel Dutch-colonial cottages and 18th-century warehouse ruins, a short walk from Fort Oranje's cannons and the cliff-edge view down to Lower Town and the Caribbean. Mornings start slow — bread from a corner bakery, coffee on a shaded step, the mail plane from Sint Maarten buzzing overhead. What to Try
Use the hotel as a base for the island's two big draws: hiking The Quill (the dormant volcano that dominates the skyline — the crater rim trail is a stiff but doable morning; the rainforest inside the crater feels prehistoric) and diving the marine park (lava fingers, 17th-century anchors, and volcanic pinnacles like Aquarium and Charlie Brown, all a few minutes' boat ride out). Above ground, wander the ruins of Lower Town's old warehouses, poke into the small but excellent St. Eustatius Historical Foundation Museum, and drive up to White Wall for the geology and the view across to Saba and St. Kitts.
Insider Tip
Almost nothing on Statia takes cards reliably — bring more USD cash than you think you need, and hit the Windward Islands Bank ATM in Oranjestad on arrival day, not Sunday. Also: book any Quill hike or dive for the morning. By early afternoon, the volcano is usually wrapped in cloud and the wind picks up on the dive sites.
The Practical Stuff
Statia's F.D. Roosevelt Airport is a 5-minute drive from Oranjestad, served by Winair from Sint Maarten (short 20-minute hop, spectacular approach). The island is 8 sq mi — a rental car or scooter is useful but not essential; taxis and walking cover most of Oranjestad. Confirm arrival time and any airport pickup directly with Chez Famous, and ask ahead about breakfast, kitchen access, and whether the on-site power runs on 110V or 220V outlets, as this varies by property on Statia. USD is the official currency. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and hiking shoes with grip — the Quill trail is steep and rooty.
