Boven Peak: Statia's Wild Northern Ridge
Sisal ruins, seabird cliffs, and 360-degree Caribbean views on the island's most underrated hike
Why Go
Everyone comes to Statia for the Quill volcano — but the locals will quietly tell you the northern hills of Boven are where the real solitude lives. Five weathered peaks, salt spray on the wind, and views back across the whole island that make you understand why 18th-century sailors used this ridge as a landmark.
The Experience
Boven sits inside Quill/Boven National Park, a protected patchwork of dry tropical forest, thorn scrub, and volcanic hillside covering the rugged northern third of Sint Eustatius. The main summit trail climbs out of the Venus Bay plain, threads past the crumbling stone walls of an old sisal plantation and a long-abandoned distillery, then switchbacks up through goat tracks and cactus to the top. From the ridge you get one of the great uncelebrated panoramas in the Caribbean: the Quill's perfect cone to the south, Saba floating on the horizon, St. Kitts and Nevis across the channel, and the Atlantic pounding into Venus Bay far below. Nesting seabirds wheel off the cliffs; iguanas sun themselves on the rocks. Expect two to three hours round trip, some scrambling, and — most of the time — not a single other hiker.
What to Try
Start at the Venus Bay trailhead and take the full Boven summit loop rather than stopping at the Gilboa Ridges viewpoint. Bring a small pair of binoculars — Boven is one of the best spots on the island for tropicbirds, brown boobies, and (if you're patient in the scrub) the endemic Lesser Antillean iguana. On the way down, detour to the boulder beach at Venus Bay to cool off; the surf is too rough for swimming but the tidepools are excellent.
Insider Tip
Buy your STENAPA trail tag at the National Parks office in Oranjestad before you drive up — rangers do check, and the $6 tag is good for a full year in both Boven and the Quill. Start at first light: by 10 a.m. the north side loses its shade and there is virtually none on the ridge itself. Locals also swear the trail is best in the days right after a rain, when the dry forest briefly turns green and the frangipani blooms.
The Practical Stuff
Trailhead: end of the dirt road past Zeelandia, roughly 15 minutes' drive north of Oranjestad — a 4x4 or high-clearance rental is smart in wet weather. No entrance gate; self-registered STENAPA trail tag required (available at the Gallows Bay park office, weekdays 8 a.m.–5 p.m.). Bring at least 2 liters of water per person, sturdy closed-toe shoes, sun protection, and a whistle. No shade, no facilities, no cell coverage on the ridge — tell someone your plan before you go.
