Boven National Park
Statia's wild northern hills, five peaks and one unforgettable ridge walk
Why Go
Most visitors to Sint Eustatius aim straight for the Quill volcano, which means Boven's tangled network of ridge trails, sisal-plantation ruins and cliff-edge sea views on the island's northern tip often belongs entirely to you.
The Experience
Boven is the quieter, drier, more rugged half of the Quill/Boven National Park, sprawling across five hills ΓÇö Boven, Venus, Gilboa, Signal and Bergje ΓÇö in the roughly 5.4-square-kilometre reserve managed by STENAPA. The terrain here is nothing like the mossy crater of the Quill: expect cactus-lined valleys, dry tropical forest, wind-scoured ridgelines and sudden, cinematic drops down to Venus Bay and Zeelandia Beach. The classic outing is the Venus BayΓÇôBoven loop (allow 2 to 3 hours), which climbs the Gilboa Ridges through the crumbling remains of a 19th-century sisal plantation and old distillery before topping out on Boven itself for panoramic views of Saba, St. Kitts and the Quill rising behind you. Wildlife is a real highlight ΓÇö the park is a Caribbean Birding Trail site, and you'll likely spot Antillean crested hummingbirds, bridled quail-doves and, if you're lucky, the endemic Statia morning glory clinging to the slopes.
What to Try
Tackle the Boven summit trail from Venus Bay plain for the fullest sense of the park's wild character; pair it with the Venus Bay Trail for coastal vistas, and dedicate an hour to the Gilboa Hill loop if you're short on time but still want a proper ridge walk.
Insider Tip
Register at the STENAPA office in Lower Town before you set off (a small park fee funds trail maintenance) and start no later than 7:30 a.m. ΓÇö the northern hills have almost no canopy shade, and by mid-morning the exposed ridges become punishingly hot. Bring at least two litres of water per person and sturdy shoes with grip, because the volcanic scree on the descents is genuinely slippery.
The Practical Stuff
Trailheads sit on the north side of the island, roughly a 10-minute drive from Oranjestad; a rental car or a lift from your hotel is the easiest way in, as there's no public transport. Trails are open daily during daylight hours, entry is via a nominal STENAPA nature fee (around US$3 per hiker, or included in a dive/nature tag), and there are no facilities at the trailheads ΓÇö no toilets, no water, no shade shelters ΓÇö so come fully prepared.
