A quiet climb through Statia's forgotten volcano country
Why Go
Tucked into the Boven National Park on St. Eustatius's wild northern tip, Bergje ΓÇö Dutch for "little mountain" ΓÇö is the trail locals point to when they want you to see the Statia most visitors miss: an unspoiled corner of extinct volcanoes, endemic wildflowers, and the ghostly bones of old sugar plantations, all without another hiker in sight.
The Experience
You'll start from the main Boven National Park trailhead and follow the Venus Trail through dry tropical forest, the path crackling underfoot with sun-baked leaves and the occasional rustle of an iguana. About halfway down the descent toward Venus Bay, the Bergje spur peels off to the west and curls around the little hill itself. The whole loop runs roughly two hours round trip at an easy-to-moderate pace, but the reward is out of proportion to the effort ΓÇö sweeping ridge views over the Caribbean, hillsides dotted with the pale trumpets of the endemic Statia Morning Glory (found nowhere else on earth), and, if you look closely, the tumbled stone walls of long-abandoned plantations swallowed by scrub. It feels less like a hike and more like walking through a page of the island's history.
What to Try
Time it for early morning. The dry forest comes alive at first light ΓÇö ground doves, tremblers, and the click of hermit crabs on the trail ΓÇö and you'll be off the ridge before the sun turns the exposed sections into an oven. Bring binoculars: the north-facing slopes are one of the better spots on Statia to catch red-billed tropicbirds riding the updrafts.
Insider Tip
Almost no one bothers with the Bergje spur ΓÇö most hikers push straight down the Venus Trail to the bay and turn back. Take the branch. It's the quietest ten hectares on the island, and the Morning Glory blooms are easiest to spot in the shoulder between the wet and dry seasons (late November and again in May). Stop by the STENAPA office in Oranjestad first to grab a $6 hiking tag; it funds the trail maintenance that keeps this place walkable.
The Practical Stuff
Trailhead is at the north end of the island, roughly a 15-minute drive from Oranjestad ΓÇö a rental car or taxi is essential as there's no bus service. Allow 2 hours round trip from the Boven entrance. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes (the volcanic scree is loose), pack at least 1.5 liters of water per person, and avoid the midday window between 11am and 3pm. No facilities, no shade at the summit, no cell signal for stretches ΓÇö tell someone your plan before you go.
