Villa Nolen
A four-bedroom hillside hideaway above Grand Cul-de-Sac, built around a hundred-year-old quenettier tree
Why Go
Some St Barth villas dazzle with white marble and infinity edges; Villa Nolen wins you over more quietly. A local quenettier tree grows straight through the heart of the house — the owners call it the soul of the place — and every terrace, pergola, and lounge chair has been arranged in deference to it. Below, the Grand Cul-de-Sac lagoon shifts through every shade of blue between breakfast and cocktail hour, and the whitewashed vaulted ceilings and arched doorways keep the whole thing feeling more like a well-loved family home than a rental.
The Experience
You arrive up a quiet hillside road on the windward side of the island, and the villa unfolds slowly rather than announcing itself. The main level opens onto the pool terrace and that show-stealing lagoon view — kite surfers zipping across the reef in the distance, the Petit Cul-de-Sac peninsula curving off to the right. Mornings are for espresso under the straw-pergola back terrace, afternoons for the uniquely shaped pool ringed in stone and bougainvillea, evenings for the bar and open-plan lounge where the tree canopy filters the light. Four bedrooms sleep up to eight: one connects directly to the main terrace, three sit on the lower level under a shared covered veranda with lagoon views from bed. It's a house designed for a family or two couples who actually want to spend time together, not scatter to opposite wings.
What to Try
Book the villa's private chef for at least one evening — dinner on the main terrace as the lagoon goes dark is the moment that stays with people. Take the fifteen-minute walk (or two-minute drive) down to the lagoon shore in the morning before the wind picks up; the water is warm, waist-deep for a long way out, and ideal for a swim before breakfast. Ask the concierge to arrange a kite lesson from the Grand Cul-de-Sac beach, or a sunset sailing excursion out of Gustavia. The villa's yoga-on-the-terrace booking is quietly one of the best ways to start a day on the island.
Insider Tip
Grand Cul-de-Sac is a genuine 15–20 minutes from Gustavia's shops and restaurants, and the road is winding at night — rent a Mini Moke or a small SUV rather than relying on taxis, and stock the villa kitchen on your first afternoon at the Marché U in Saint-Jean on the way in from the airport. The prevailing trade winds hit this side of the island first, which is why the lagoon is a kite-surfing mecca; if you want glassy water for paddleboarding, go out before 10am.
