Just off the airport runway in Saint-Jean sits the not-so-secret engine of every St Barth vacation: the biggest, best-stocked supermarket on the rock. Locals, chefs, and yacht crews all push carts down the same aisles, hunting French cheeses, Caribbean produce, and enough rosé to sink a tender.
The Experience
Marché U doesn't try to feel glamorous — the glamour comes from what's inside. Fluorescent lights bounce off pyramids of ripe mangoes, Normandy butter, and imported Iberico ham while flip-flopped shoppers weave between villa chefs comparing Bordeaux vintages and boat captains loading trolleys with Perrier by the case. It's air-conditioned, efficient, and gloriously well-priced by St Barth standards. The bakery counter perfumes the entrance with warm baguettes; the fish case glitters with tuna landed that morning; the wine aisle stretches like a small Parisian cave. Come once for a bottle of water and you'll leave with a rotisserie chicken, a wedge of Comté, and dinner plans reshuffled.
What to Try
Grab a still-warm baguette and a slab of St Nectaire from the fromagerie, a pot of local rum-vanilla jam, a chilled bottle of Whispering Angel (cheaper here than anywhere else on the island), and whatever the fishmonger just laid out on ice. The prepared-foods counter does a serious rotisserie chicken and stuffed crab — perfect villa dinner when you can't face another restaurant reservation.
Insider Tip
Time your run for right after opening (8am) or in the mid-afternoon lull — mid-morning and pre-sunset the parking lot near the airport becomes a scrum of rental Minis. Bring a cooler bag: it's a short but hot drive back to Gouverneur or Colombier, and the frozen aisle is worth the effort.
