The Experience
Sitting on the open-air corner of Rue de la France and Rue du Roi Oscar II, L'Oubli ("The Forgotten") is the anti-fussy heart of Gustavia — the place islanders swing by for a morning café crème, tourists collapse into after a Shell Beach swim, and boat crews reconvene once the sun drops behind the masts. It has been the same red-and-white awning, the same wraparound bar, and the same 7 a.m.–11 p.m. rhythm since 1981. Service is friendly-French casual (patient smiles, quick pours), music leans easy Caribbean-lounge, and the crowd is a genuine mix of billionaires in flip-flops, fishermen off shift, and families splitting a burger. It's not trying to be glamorous, which is precisely why it stays cool.
What to Try
Start the day with a fresh-squeezed orange juice and a warm pain au chocolat (breakfast runs €2–8). For lunch, the burger (€16) with a cold Carib beer is the tried-and-true order, but the tapas board is where the kitchen quietly shines — chorizo, olives, marinated fish — perfect grazing while the harbour empties out. Come sundown, order a ti' punch or a passionfruit mojito (cocktails from €10) and let the golden-hour light bounce off the yachts.
Insider Tip
Skip the interior stools and angle for one of the outside tables on the Rue du Roi Oscar II side — that's the sweet spot for people-watching, especially between 6 and 7 p.m. when the port promenade fills up with sunset strollers. Pay in euros or card; there's no reservations system, so if you want a prime table for a regatta week apéro, arrive 20 minutes early.
