The Experience
Tucked at the southern edge of Gustavia and reachable on foot from town, Shell Beach (Anse de Grand Galet) trades traditional white sand for a thick blanket of miniature conch and cowrie shells shaped by decades of Atlantic swell. The cove is compact and framed by low rocky headlands, so the water stays a glassy turquoise most mornings and the vibe is decidedly local—yachties wander over from the port, families claim the shady patches under sea grape trees, and everyone eventually ends up at the beach bar for a rosé at golden hour. Come mid-afternoon a DJ often spins soft house at Shellona, and the crowd shifts from swim-and-snooze to see-and-be-seen without ever losing its barefoot ease.
What to Try
Wade in with reef shoes or aqua socks (the shells are beautiful but sharp on tender feet), then swim out about 30 meters where the water deepens and small schools of sergeant majors dart around the rocky edges—bring a mask and you'll usually spot needlefish and the occasional ray. Post-swim, book a lounger at Shellona for their Greek-inspired mezze and a chilled bottle of Whispering Angel, or grab a simpler bite and a fresh juice at Do Brazil on the northern point.
Insider Tip
Arrive before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.—midday sun bakes the shells and there's almost no natural shade unless you've reserved a lounger. And resist the urge to pocket shells as souvenirs; locals are protective of the beach's namesake and you'll get a polite scolding. Sunset here faces due west over the harbor mouth, and it's one of the only west-facing beaches on the island, so it's the go-to spot for the evening apéro ritual.
The Practical Stuff
Free public access with a small parking area at the top of the stairs (fills up fast; walking from Gustavia takes about 10 minutes). No entrance fee, no lifeguard, no public restrooms—use the facilities at the beach clubs if you're a paying customer. Loungers at Shellona or Do Brazil run roughly €50–€90 per person and reservations are essential in high season (December–April). Bring water shoes, reef-safe sunscreen, and cash or card for the bars.
