The Experience
Reaching Saba's westernmost point is less a tourist stop than a small pilgrimage. From The Bottom, the road (and then footpath) narrows toward the Wells Bay / Mary's Point side of the island, where the volcanic cliffs plunge dramatically into the Caribbean. There are no ticket booths, no railings, no gift shop — just black-rock headlands, wheeling tropicbirds, and the constant Atlantic-fed swell hammering the coastline far below. On a clear afternoon you can pick out St. Eustatius and St. Kitts to the southeast, while the western horizon is pure, uninterrupted blue. Sunset here is the moment: the sun drops directly into the sea, lighting up the cliffs of Mary's Point (site of Saba's earliest 17th-century European settlement) in copper and rose. It's quiet enough that you'll usually hear only wind, waves, and the odd goat.
What to Try
Time your visit for the last hour before sunset, then combine the viewpoint with a short scramble along the Mary's Point Trail off Wells Bay Road for cliff-top ruins and even wider ocean panoramas. Bring binoculars — red-billed tropicbirds nest in these cliffs, and humpback whales pass offshore between January and April.
Insider Tip
Skip the taxi and walk the last stretch from Wells Bay Road on foot; the best photo angle isn't at the marked spot but about fifty meters further along the goat track to the north, where the cliff opens up and you get Diamond Rock in the frame. Bring a windbreaker — it's easily 10°F breezier here than in The Bottom — and never attempt it in wet weather; the volcanic scree gets treacherous fast.
The Practical Stuff
Free and open 24/7, but daylight only is safe — there's no lighting and no cell reception in spots. Reach it via a short drive or 20–30 minute walk from The Bottom toward Wells Bay; a rental car or a taxi from Windwardside/Fort Bay works well. Wear proper shoes (not flip-flops), carry water, and pack out everything you bring in. No facilities, no shade, and no fencing — keep well back from the edge, especially with kids.
